Quite by chance (unfortunate chance, I'm in hospital...!), ...I came across books left by patients in hospital, when they left. These books "given to read so that they continue to live", one must find them all over the world, and even on street corners, in France...and so I came across "Les romans et recits autobiographiques de Jack London (Robert Laffont Ed.., in French translation...and even more specifically, in this compilation, on "Les vagabond du Rail" (in the original title, "The Road"). I began the fascinating reading, as I have an affectionate taste for these American Hobos of the end of the 19th century. I even devoted a thread to it on SG (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=28194.msg338266#msg338266), as well as a 2018 cover by Jimmie Rodgers: Hobo Bill last ride (don't look for it, I'll do it again).
Before closing this parenthesis on the Hobo theme, I recommend you listen on SG to two great songs on the theme - the first by Darren Gibbons and Stephen Moore, produced by Zoltan: Hobo Blues II https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=34292.msg406282#msg406282- the second, magnificent: Hobo Soul in festival 3/4, https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=32790.msg389787#msg389787
...what an incredibly adventurous and prolific life he led (he died at the age of 40 https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_London ).
And my question to you dear English-speaking friends of SG is:
- it's not possible that a life as "cinematographic" as his hasn't given rise to more film adaptations of his biography ...I've only found references to an old film from 1943, entitled "Jack London" by Alfred Santell USA, which is, by chance, on YouTube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JaZYKg95HO4
Do you know of any other film versions or TV series about Jack London's life?

Thank you Ted for this quick and very complete answer
...I hadn't read Jack London either, except of course for L'adla foret and Croc Blanc.
In fact, it reminded me of a lovely song in French by Gerard Manset, called "solitude des latitudes "

I've started watching this on Plex for free. (It's not a service I've ever used before, and they serve you a couple of advertisements and they collect send a bunch of your digital information to advertisers. I'm using a VPN and an incognito window.) It's really interesting – particularly how he was received and perceived in France.

Hope you get well soon my friend.
Yes get well soon JP!
Wishing you a speedy recovery, JP.
Hoping you get well soon. As for Jack London, I am partial to The Sea Wolf.
Thank you for your good wishes...friends, ...old age (and its cortege of physical decline) is an ugly flaw, try to escape it :D :D
Thank you Booby for the reference to Loup de Mer...this novel isn't in the huge compilation of Jack London's autobiographical stories, which I picked up at the 'livres donnés', at the Hospital...but I'll try to get hold of it...
I'm currently reading 'Vagabonds du rail'...it's fascinating and the way Jack London describes in detail the techniques used by the hobos to take freight trains and then evade the guards (there were two or three per train...it's fascinating! if you're thinking of covering the mythical song King of the road, you must have read this book first ;) ;)
Of course I'm already preparing a cover of Charlie Winston's 'Like a Hobo' ;)
As far as my health is concerned, this evil combination of acute pancreatitis and flu has really shaken me up...but 'I will survive', I'll be discharged from the Hosto Saint Jack tomorrow :D

That's good news! Thanks for sharing.

Funny Cameroon story: There's a famous Cameroonian footballer named Roger Milla. I know a Cameroonian who opened a restaurant in Silver Spring, Maryland, and wanted to give it a name that would appeal to the Cameroonian diaspora, but he also wanted an American-sounding name. So he named his restaurant "Roger Miller Restaurant (https://www.rogermillerrestaurants.com/)" before really realizing that Roger Miller was the name of an American singer from the mid-60s. And like most Americans, Roger Miller probably couldn't find Cameroon on a world map. I was only familiar with Miller because my dad used to sing "King of the Road," and "Dang Me" in the car.
Speaking of Americans and Jack London: I finished watching
Jack London: American Original last night and was fascinated. I had no idea how huge he was, influential, and how many competing political factions tried to claim London as one of their own. And, as an American, his impact and influence were boiled down in my country to a couple of "dog books." His radical politics were completely swept under the rug as far as the American canon was concerned. In American curricula, writers who followed in London's footsteps are likewise mostly remembered for their most politically safe works – Hemingway (
The Old Man and the Sea), Steinbeck (
Of Mice and Men), and Faulkner (
The Sound and the Fury) – sidestepping their more provocative critiques of class, race, and power.
Sorry you had to go to the hospital in order to open my eyes about the other works by Jack London.
QuoteThere's a famous Cameroonian footballer named Roger Milla
I know Roger Milla well...fantastic Cameroonian footballer who played 10 years in several French soccer clubs.

..me too, and as the proverb says: "every cloud has a silver lining", this hospitalization allowed me a fortuitous (re)discovery of Jack London, whom I knew only through "croc-blanc"..and we found ourselves together in the same hospital bed.

JP! Take care and get well soon!
*powerhug*
I hope you're feeling better soon, JP.
I haven't read Jack London in quite a while now, but I was very into his works at the turn of this century. A good collection of his novels is available from Library of America. Think I'll return to it for another reading...
Oui, merci à tous pour vos bons voeux
QuoteThink I'll return to it for another reading...
Yes, it really is worth reading and re-reading.
And don't forget to watch the films and series compiled by the excellent Ted. For my part, I've ordered the ARTE France documentary on VOD. "Jack London, an american adventure

I'm getting out of hospital tomorrow and to celebrate, I'll probably do a repeat of this classic. " Saint James infirmary " ;)
