Title: Rainbow - Man on the Silver Mountain
Post by: Zoltan on June 16, 2024, 11:37:48 AM
I did a quick little cover to test things out :)

One guitar track that plays everything except the pre-chorus arpeggios (those are played with a different guitar track and i cheated as much as i could to make them happen!).

Bassline that tries to hang along and a vocal track where i went heavy with vibrato. For those wondering it's not an effect. I somehow managed to sound like this weird warbly thing... Shakey pudding vocals?

The drums were from a midi file i found floating around the internet and tweaked to hell and back. It's still kinda iffy.

The track cuts short as i didn't remember how it goes.

Man you got balls!  ;D

This is one of the first songs I learned on electric guitar (except the arpeggio part, that I still haven't nailed). And still one of my favourites (I think I play the riff at least monthly  ::))

You did a hell of a job on both the guitar and the (impossible to replicate) vocals.

Well done my friend. Well done.

..... and I am a bit curious..... how did you cheat to get those arpeggios so perfect?

Not familiar with the original but this is KILLER!
EDIT-I just looked it up on YT.  Interesting that you're singing it in the same key but an octave lower.  That's POWER!!

The cheat:

:)

I didn't learn the song properly. I checked the chords from internet and used sloppy cross picking for the arpeggios. The picking hand movement was kinda like turning a key. I couldn't manage to dampen the strings properly so i didn't even try. Played it (crampedly) once and copied it for the second time it comes again in the song.

After recording it i couldn't even strum through the arpeggios. Today i tried it and it felt a bit easier so i guess it's possible to learn it.

The scalloped fretboard is a killer. Still trying to get used to it. So far it's harder to play... Yikes!

A real beauty of a track and as Geir said brave!
I dig the organ with the grand guitars.  Vocals totally work and your new strat is lovely to behold.
Good to see you back around the site after your moving adventures

I don't know the original... but it's so well done!

I went without transition from listening to ODH's stairway to heaven to your cover...and the contrast in sound between the end of ODH's piece and your first notes is quite striking. ;)

Great song and great version. Never really hooked up with Rainbow but had a lot of respect for them.

Great cover Zoltan.  I was a bit of a Blackmore fan - and still am to an extent - and saw them live a few times in the mid seventies.

I particularly love your lower register vocal.  It adds a whole new level of menace and attitude.

Cool take on a classic song. Hard to follow RJD, but you've put your own spin on it, which is the right way to cover. Well done.

A super version of Man On The Silver Mountain. Your lower register vocal works well and makes it your own. Great work on the music and especially the guitar arpeggio section! I've never played a scalloped fret board before but I can understand how it would take some getting use to. Nice work Zoltan!

Must agree with Farrel here. Those arpeggios are damn impressive

over the years I probably have given them a go about once a year but never got them to a level where I would play them live. (I have played spotlight kid tho  8) )

Yeah... those leads are damn impressive...  I doubt it is because of scalloped potatoes though... maybe sea scallops you had for dinner?  You got the spirit of Neptune...

however your lines are not correct here... you should have just sung "I'm the man, I'm the man,"
you don't need no silver mountain..

I said this long ago... you are a monster.. you veil your greatness well...

I dig rainbow but I only heard a few songs of theirs... this has me thinking I need to go listen more.

and since there are alot of Dio fans on the site... here is a not well known fact.... Dio sang two songs for Kerry Livgren
The Mask of the Great Deceiver is my favorite of the two.
personally I think Dio's work on this made the track palatable... it is too sterile otherwise to me and I am a huge KL fan
