Title: Hurts So Good
Post by: Farrell Jackson on May 06, 2024, 08:49:45 AM
I've wanted to cover this John Mellencamp song for a long time so I put my head down and did it.

2 tracks rhythm guitar - G&L Strat and Ernie Ball OLP. Fender Pro Junior amp.
1 track Bass - Fender Squire Modified Jazz bass direct.
3 tracks vocals - 1 lead and two harmonies TLM 103 Neumann Mic.
Zoom drums.
Recorded on my 18 year old Fostex VF160, Eq'd with Harbal and Mastered by LANDR.

Nice work on this, Farrell - everything sounds crisp and clear in the mix. Special shout-out on your vocals - great clarity using the Neumann!

Love the entire tune but special attention to this killer vocal. I'm seriously jealous.

That was some nostalgic fun.

Sounds like JCM right here.
Great job on this Farrell!
The guitar blisters.
Vocals even better.
I am a big fan of Mellencamp... especially some of his more obscure tracks like "Whenever We Wanted" and all that lp

impressive! what a sound; what a voice I don't know this song and I'm really keen to hear the original.

I remember playing this song in a rock band back in the '90's but it didn't sound this good! Great cover, Farrell and what a fantastic vocal performance. Those guitars sound so good and cool production.

Yes, this is just one of those classic old rockers. This one never get tired for me. You nailed the guitars and the sound and yes top vocal. Would like to hear this live!

So good I had to listen three times in a row. I love this song and JCM. I've been wanting to do a cover by him, but feeling that the vocals would be hard to pull off, and some tricky guitar licks. Here you've nailed both. I can picture you up on stage at a county fair belting this out to appreciative fans. That old-ish recorder that can spit out a CD looks cool. I would ask you to send me a CD, but I have to find a CD player first, actually I think my son's old X-box can play both DVDs and CDs  :) . It shows that the quality of the result is more in the performer than in having all the latest equipment, although I guess LANDR is AI, which is new fangled. Really nice job on the performance and recording of a really awesome song. Any chance you could send me the stems to test out my new mixing software? :)

Man, a wicked cover! Your vocals on here really stand out, it's perfect for Mellencamp. Great sound here too, those guitars have a real nice snarl to them.

Don't know the original but I dig Andy Yorks guitar work ,don't know if he was on this original but it sounds like something he would do.
Your vocals are excellent on this

Does it still hurt? I hope you've got to the stage where its just a dull ache :D

It took a sweet while for me to comment on this one. And i think i should have taken even more time. Especially considering that lame opening line i got for you!

I'm familiar with this song and might have even tried to sing this in my weaker years (when i was young and gullible!).

The playing is tight as a mongoose wrapped to dry. The vocals have the youthful howl to them. I can hear you having lots of fun performing this and there's hardly any hurt in sight. This ain't even hurting my ears as you're really doing it good.

There's one thing you should be wary of... Throwing buzz words like "recorded on old Fostex VF160" and doing it so well might result into them young ones trying to find these pieces of "solid gold" vintage gear :)
EQ'd on Harbal? What's Harbal? You mean after digesting Herbals? :)

I think i'm with Pru on this one. The best song JCM wrote.

Thanks Zoltan :) . HarBal is Software tool I purchased a few years ago when my hearing started to degrade. I've kept up with the upgrades. HarBal stands for Harmonic Balancing. Basically I use it to eq my finished songs using my ears and eyes with various graphs. It allows me to upload a favorite "professional" mix/mastered song. I can then visually match my song to it's eq graph. I have saved a custom rock style eqing that I use as my target guide graph. It's not perfect but a good tool to get real close for additional tweaking.

Ah, i had forgotten about that program. Glad to hear it works for you :)

There's been a lot of similar programs in recent years, but this was one of the earliest. The OG's so to speak.

not imho.... his best stuff was on a much more obscure album called "Whenever We Wanted"
that whole album was amazing and it didn't get much radio play... and he was a bit raunchy too..

I hadn't heard this song before - but your performance is right up there.  Fantastic vocal and marvellous guitar tone.

Very pro - as expected.
