Title: O Holy Night
Post by: StephenM on November 28, 2022, 04:31:02 PM
YuleFest (banner image missing)

I am planning to enter this for the Yule fest/Christmas fest... but not sure if it's too early... precedent would say no...it's not...

I love this song.  I treasure it... and I would never be one that someone would ask me to sing this... but that is precisely why I am singing it... because I love it.. and this was a fun way to spend some hours today... such joy in my heart...LANDR-O Holy Night (steve vocal zoom master)-Balanced-Medium.mp3

This conjured and image of cowboys sitting around a campfire, in the middle of a prairie, under a star-filled sky – far from home on Christmas eve. The harmonica did all of that.

It's a beautiful song. I have a theory about why so much religious music is so good. Wanna hear it? Of course you do. The year-end holidays are like spawning season for religious music. With fish, not all of the eggs are fertilized, not all the fertilized eggs hatch, and not all of the hatched fish survive long. The ones that do survive, face a lot of competition. Some – very few – live to reproduce. It's the same with songs. After many, many generations, we are left with the best of the best, still struggling to be heard, to be covered, to not be forgotten, not to be drowned out by ever more upstarts.

"O Holy Night" has been around since the 1840s, so I think it's made the cut. "Step Into Christmas" by Elton John might not be around as long.

100%.

Damn this suits you so well! I was waiting for the concept album about electric eels and starfishes (going thru time and space), but now i'm seeing Stephen as a cowboy, sitting on a campfire... eating electric eel soup, and spitting starfish pieces in a jar.

Sounds great and you've totally owned the song.

Great stuff Ted... I would guess you hit something right on.  I wonder how all the technology of recording will affect this over time?

I agree, this is a great Christmas song and you've done it well Stephen. It's one I always sing along with but when it gets to those ultra-high, notes I drop down to bullfrog level. I really enjoyed this; the harmonica was an excellent choice. After hearing your cover I'm slowly getting into the X-mas Spirit. Thanks for helping bring in the X-mas cheer!

Shit songs will still be shit songs. But digital versions will be easier to access, and dismiss all over again. On the other hand, there are probably good and great songs that have never been recorded or digitized – they exist only in sheet music – and they are just forgotten, and they are very unlikely to ever be discovered.

My lovely wife Silsa plays organ and piano at a local Lutheran church for 20 years.  You should see their music library.  Proves your point.  Whether the songs are good or not I don't know.  What I do know is there are thousands of them.

Ooh that's nice, Stephen. Kind of had a Dubliners vibe for me.

That guitar sounds great.

Great to hear another side of you Stephen ! I think this song is more well known in the States than over here.. I'm always reminded of Eric Cartman's version in South Park when I hear it. Yours is much more pleasing on the ear !
