Title: Space - odh original
Post by: ODH on July 06, 2021, 11:59:52 AM
This isn't a song about space. Not the aliens and stars sort.  Nor is it  a song about quiet country space.  It's a song about autism and mental health.  Recently we've had cause to research into autism and as I'm reading the symptoms it's clear that I tick many of the boxes myself.

This song started with a backer that I did probably a year ago.  A week before the end of the New Wave fest I remembered it and thought I could use that for that.  It's taken three weeks to get it to this state though, writing and recording lyrics and all.

I will post the lyrics because I know they're not clear in places.  But not now.

Anyway.  Enjoy.

dreamy... mesmerizing..... I feel a vacuum pulling me closer, closer to the music....that intro is a bit reminiscent of some great Fleetwood Mac tracks off some of their later and lesser known albums, which I liked....

then that chorus kicks in...wowowow...I was not expecting that!!!!

I can really relate to the song...lyrically...it's big and the music is dynamite...

such a great diversity of music styles on SC...just great stuff Nick

Hello Nick - this is quality, quality and class.

Love the shifting dynamics of the dreamy, tight verse ambience versus the (comparative) chaos and attack of the chorus. Some lovely keyboard stuff going on. Reminds me of the kind of atmosphere created on 'Riders on the Storm'. It's a brilliant piece of work. And infectious. Dragged me straight into a 2nd listen.

I too have been going on an interesting autism self-discovery journey in the past 18 months. It's weird when you suddenly realise all your 'quirks' weren't quirks at all, just a fault in the wiring. Things start to make sense.

Wow, this is a powerful track brother. we have some family friends and their oldest son is pretty high on the spectrum. He attached to my son John and it's a very genuine and unique friendship. I don't envy the families challenge but we love them dearly and are lucky to be a part of his life.
Great song brother!
Rock on!

Wow! Love the dynamics and power of this one Nick. The instrumentation is fabulous, love those swirly keys and the loud parts are superb. You've mixed this really well and the whole song just draws you in and constantly surprises you. The vocals are superb, a great performance, and although I can't make out all the lyrics, I get the gist. It's a really powerful piece of work, well done.

We are also going through an ASD discovery journey in this household. It may explain a lot of the mental health issues that have occurred over the years, and the diagnosis process is ongoing. It's good that people are more aware of this and other aspects of mental health. I'd be interested to see the full lyrics at some point.

Thanks everyone for your comments.  What we've learned is that everybody ticks some boxes for autism, it's just a matter of how many and to what extent.  I suspect that anyone creative and with the kind of obsessive nature to make music is probably "autistic".  That's certainly true in my case and I suspect many here.

The mix I first put up was wrong in the loud parts, the bass was way too much.  I've hopefully improved that now and added a new mix.  There's also a tiny bit more dreamy keyboard in the later part.

You can never have too much bass! ;) I can't compare the mixes directly but this sounds great.

I have been interested in behavioural economics for a while, and reading books by Kahneman and Ariely got me looking into psychology more. I did several online personality tests and that helped reveal a lot about my behaviour, and some of the negative things I do and feel. While I don't register on the ASD scale, it appears I have obsessive compulsive personality disorder. Which explains why I spend hours remixing things and tweaking the tiniest things that most people wouldn't notice! It probably also explains why I feel compelled to listen to every song post, which makes me a good forum member.....

Someone close to me has struggled all their life with a number of issues and is undergoing ASD diagnosis. It will be interesting to see if that process is helpful.

Very creative way to express the issues of the somewhat disturbing and always mysterious situation of autism.

glad I got to revisit this Nick... it's a great song, wonderful and interesting recording, and about a tough subject.  I believe all of do better when we respect personal space.  For some it's a matter of existence.  I like social distancing.  In some ways I am grateful for whats happened for that...
