Title: Bishmanrock - Sand in My Boots
Post by: Bishmanrock on July 01, 2021, 08:06:32 AM
The original 'Sand in My Boots' was from my first album back in 2005, a small but moody piece that acted as an interlude track. I eventually swept it under the rug and pretended it didn't exist for many years, partly because that first version was terrible for the ears, and partly because I had the nagging feeling I'd ripped it off from somewhere. Coming up to 16 years I thought I'd dust it off and do it a little justice.

Bishmanrock - Sand in My Boots

Writing/lyrics/vox - Bishmanrock
Guitar - Artur Hearhadze
Bass - Will Finch
Drums - Nicolas Bonneyrat

Walking on and on
Staring at the sun
Path is long and dry
Don't know how I'll get by

Walking on and on
Staring at the sun
Sand is my boots
Bone dry to the roots

Walking on and on
Staring at the sun
Waiting for the end
Somewhere round the bend

This is great. It gives me a Jethro Tull vibe but also with a bit of Roy Wood from The Move on vocals. Musically, the only thing that sounds familiar are those opening chords which are very reminiscent of Matthew Southern Comfort's 'Woodstock' (I never worry about whether I've ripped something off because I often do, lol). It's a fine song - superb melody. And I love all that atmospheric stuff at the end. My only criticism is that it's too short! I know you say it's an interlude track, but it could easily have taken off into an extended, epic prog freak-out. Very cool indeed.

Based on your most recent album (I like that a lot btw) I was expecting something heavy..... ;) This is quite intriguing, a very Fripp-y guitar over some really nice intricate rhythm work. It's a really effective repeating sequence and the vocals fit nicely with the backing track. It's actually pretty catchy, I can feel myself singing it already.....

Glad you dusted it off, I liked this a lot.

For some strange reason I got a Hollies vibe from this ....

Really catchy and well produced.

Love the vocals and the guitar. A really well done song !

love the ending to ... unpredictable as all good endings are

Top notch writing and musicianship.  King Crimson's "Court" comes to mind.  I can hear the influence.

Excellent listen. Sounds brilliant in headphones, beautifully produced. On top of what other folks have said about the musicianship, just a quick nod to that cool bassline too. Great tune.

superb work...just stunning....love the guitars especially...lots of room in between to breathe which is what the masters all achieve....

I can hear alot of "influences"...might be the ones I know and totally not the ones you know...

as for you felt you were ripping this off from somewhere?  No one owns the chords...no one owns the notes... I suppose some can own the sequences etc...the rights to them...
like it or not we all influence one another...this sounds pretty original to me...

I could add also that your vocals sound fantastic...very, very good.... and for a SC comp you remind me a bit of BerryPatch

I could agree with that Hollies thing in parts... also a bit like Robin Trower in that deep throaty little lead part...

You're not far off - the track it leads into continues the same guitar and builds into a pretty heavy part-cover track. I won't post it, partly because I don't want to get into the habit of suddenly dumping my backlog in here, but also mostly because if I'm being honest it doesn't quite hold up to what this track promises. Maybe I'll rework them both into one mega track one day and make it so the follow up is more deserving of attention.

Thanks! Strangedays came out in March, so that's my most recent release. Anything Devil Road (2017) onwards is of much higher quality. Anything pre-2017... well, let's just say I'm reworking it to be palatable to the human ear. The voice you're hearing is Jessica Blaise Ward, who I work with quite regularly and is a cracking musician. She also has some solo stuff which is synthwave and has really cool vibes to it. When we get together though, we wind up doing some sort of moody heavy prog thing, not sure what the actual genre is but can't say I'm fussed - it works for me!

Well done here! I like the vocals and melody. Great backing tracks as well with a cool lead guitar and a wonderful bass line!

This sounds brilliant. I can hear a lot of influences in this too. A bit of pink Floyd, ozzy osbourne, yeah jethro tull, very impressive music, playing and performances. It's great.
I'll have to check out some more of your stuff too.

lovely production and a great song, tone on lead guitar is awesome. my only bug bear is that i am not big a fan of rhyming couplets but they do work well in this song.

Great piece of work and yes, should be longer. Maybe either work back to the verses from the "trippy" ending or as mentioned, divert off into another vibe entirely. I hear it at about 2:24 where the bass changes rhythm and could build into another song altogether. Oh, you did mention it's an interlude piece - curious as to what was coming next? 8)

I was searching for Bishmanrock tracks and then i found this. There was only one in the personal player, but a song like this is worth a ten. The first half of the song has a commercial sound to it, yet you're bold enough to develop the song into deeper territories (towards more prog-land). It's a short track, but you manage to do a lot in this short running time. Still it was such a joy to listen, that personally i would have brought the vocals back (at around the 1:54 seconds mark) and keep it going :)
The vocals are remarkably strong. The melodies are cool. I'm eagerly waiting to hear more of your songs!

Dead cool, this.  I would really have liked it to be longer, but whilst I get hints of other styles it is still unique - in a very good way.

Cheers folks! I'm notoriously slow at producing new music hence why this is my only contribution to the site so far, and I didn't want to spam the board with my old stuff straight after joining. I might take the opportunity to brush off some tracks that need some TLC and update them though, will keep me busy!

I might work on a longer version of this one day, although I am conscious of overdoing it, especially given the slightly repetitive nature of the rhythm. As a BBC DJ once said about a 35 second song I managed to get aired, "at least it's over before it wears out its welcome" ;)
