Me trying to write a song like Boz Scaggs. ;)
Featuring Toontrack EZ Keys & EZ Drummer 2, Trilian Bass, NI Session Strings Pro 2, and UVI Orchestral Suite for the flute solo.
Enjoy!
I was quite a fan of Silk Degrees.... and I liked the Boz very much...but to me... you are better ( but hey what do I know)....
Lowdown was cool and it was a good album... for what you do on the budget you get...yeah... I'll take your stuff ...
another winner John...
precise...detailed... interesting...
It's happened to most of us.
Good song creating John... you definitely achieved it with this.
A very bittersweet song John, a story very well told lyrically. A wonderful composition with very clever and well thought out arrangement. The piano playing is fab (as always) and there are some lovely touches (like the pizzicato strings). A great vocal over the top, you certainly don't make it easy for yourself with your complex melodies but you handle them really well, and the vocal sits beautifully in the mix.
You may have started a bit Boz Scaggs but that instrumental section from 3:47 is almost prog rock, the flute made it sound like early Genesis to me! It's a lovely section, and really creates a clever contrast to the rest of the song.
So much to like in this, another impressive and enjoyable piece of music from you. Well done!
Definitely looks back to the melodic, easy listening songwriting of the 70's, but I think you bring your own unique class and complexity to proceedings. There's so much richness here. That instrumental that kicks off at about 4:00 is absolutely sublime. I like how you create whole little worlds with your songs - they are deep, immersive experiences.
Fantastic.
I know why you'd want to emulate the Boz. I'm such a fan of Silk Degrees. It was first on my list when I started collecting vinyl again last year.
wow, what an accomplished sounding piece. Just listening to each instrument individually, each part is so well played and interesting.
Pete
I absolutely love this - it reminds me of Styx, in a way.
I love the fact that you can hear songcrafters getting better and better on this site.
There's lots of complexity in the music, and fabulous and confident vocals. Take a bow.

Very well done John! You have created an appealing, complex song and subject. Excellent melody and vocals. Your voice and style here reminds me of Christopher Cross, especially on the chorus. Bravo!

Hey, Ferrel J, bruno,Pete C,Greeny, Ferryman,Ken & SteveM-Thanks so much. It means a lot.
Steve, I really appreciate your comment, but there is no way I'm better than the Boz. But thanks anyway.

Keys and vocals both well played loving the keyboard work

These things are subjective... I like your voice better... how about a Boz Skaggs cover?
This sounds amazing, just like songs used to be from the 60's / 70's. I'm not sure I know boz scaggs, but your voice and the music style reminds me of Christopher cross which someone mentioned too. I love the timbre of your voice.
All the music sounds brilliant, kind of easy listening style. It's really good songwriting. Darren :)
Thanks again Steve. You're too kind. I'd never attempt a Boz cover because I don't want to murder his beautiful work. ;D
Darren-Thanks so much!

another great song john , and love the lyrics . well put together and a great mix cool stuff ......cheers tony cee
heard this again today...I think if I ever could do a piece like this...this good... I might never do another.... there is so much here.... music is kind of like relationships I think... there is a listen as in I heard it playing in the background or while I was doing stuff and then there is "I listened to this intently, over and over" kind of like looking at someone you love....at 2:40 you created the most amazing backing vocals there...wow...had to hear this again ....
and as the piece goes on winding like a beautiful river flowing along a meadow of green...there is a "Kansas" (the band) like music scape you create....
this is a great piece here John...
thanks...
I've said it before but I love hearing your latest compositions. Melodies from heaven and a vocal track that I could never hope to perform. Production as always is first class and the instrumentation brilliant.

Hey Tim, so sorry I failed to respond to your posting and your kind words. I hate it when that happens. Thanks so much!

Hey, Tony, Steve (again) and Ray-Thank you all so very much. Ray, I'm equally awed by your voice and I love the Phil Collins quality of it. You do fine in that area yourself.

I love how this was timestamped in several spots so I'll add mine: 2:42 had an awesome vocal harmony section. Happened only once but was worth rewinding a few times. You have a falsetto that kills, sounds great especially later in the song.
I'm a fan for sure
very complex songwriting...reminds me of Steely Dan...good one
Brilliant songcraft yet again John. I love the unexcepted lifts and section changes in your songs and this one is no exception. Rock solid groove as well, the instrumentation all sounds so great together.
Another winner, John! Great composing and performance. I have always liked the skill how you can create the atmospheres in your music. Here's some excellent examples of great arranging as well; adding strings just on the right spots, stopping drums etc... Pure brilliance!
Great song. I hear Brian Wilson influence big time, especially your vocal delivery. This is awesome. Beautiful bitter-sweet song.
Another listen, I love this tune!
Launched, Bluesberry, Berrypatch, Redler & Gritter-Thanks all so much.
