Let's see if I did this correctly. I thought I'd get my feet wet in the whole festival thing and banged this one out in two days. Phil May, lead singer of the Pretty Things, died last year and I thought I'd pay tribute to their wonderful Psych classic, SF Sorrow. This is the first track off the album, which is arguably the first Rock Opera (released in 1968, ahead of Tommy). I started making a simple beat in Garageband then I put it on the BR 1200 and added the two acoustics, the bass, the handclaps and then my trusty Dano 12 string (which is an 11 string at the moment, damn you high g string). I let it sit for a day and then added vocals and the fuzzy lead and mellotron. Hope you enjoy...

Godin Acoustic
Epiphone Viola Bass
Danelectro 12 string
Fender Strat with Fuzz Factory Pedal
Blues Junior Amp
Mellotron App

This is awesome! I love the song (though I wasn't previously familiar with it) and your arrangement, performance, and production all sound very professional. Well done!

I've never really spent any time listening to The Pretty Things before. Your post makes me think that it's time that I did. I'll start with the S.F. Sorrow album.

My God, what a talent. What an ear for detail. And what a taste in music. This is one of the greatest songs of the 60's and psych genre, and I've listened to the original hundreds of times. I simply can't fathom how you've PERFECTLY recreated it. That punchy bass tone and playing alone is astounding. I always thought it was a sitar running through it - clearly not! It's the best cover I've ever heard on here!

For anyone not familiar with this album, dive in. It's amazing. There's a whole British psych style from 1968 that is marvellous. The Pretty Things, Tomorrow and Nirvana (the original ones) being amongst them. You see the landscape that Syd Barrett was emerging from.

It's also the first concept album. Because George Martin says Sgt Peppers wasn't.

Take a bow. This is incredible!

Wow, this is brilliant Keith. Really, really good. I have to agree with Tim (Greeny) about what you've achieved here. The balance and recording of the instruments is spot on, the performance is fantastic and the final track sounds really polished and professional. You've handled things like the handclaps really well, they add to the track but aren't intrusive or too repetitive. The vocals and harmonies are excellent, and the bass sound and bass playing is superb!

I have to admit to my great shame that I didn't know this. I grew up loving English psychedelia but I only really know The Pretty Things from their 70s stuff (I saw them a couple of times around the Silk Torpedo era). I'm off to listen to the original now!

I'm not familiar with this song BerryPatch but I know good music and talent when I hear it and you definitely have it! The recording is so precise and clear. I love all the details here; such as the backing vox, harmonies and guitar. More than well done on all accounts!

Totally nailed this Keith....I had a front row seat to watching this unfold....Keith and I were talking about the site and the festivals ...I said that the festivals were one of the coolest parts of this site (shout out to 64 guitars for all his hard work in facilitating these festivals) and one of the reasons for the real community feeling on this site....the other thing about the festivals is it forces you to work fairly quickly, get something done and posted before the time is up, and sometines working quick has advantages vs. labouring over a song......capture everything quickly, first or second take, move on...sometimes real gold comes from working that way (in my experience) it can drive you into a real zone of inspiration which is a very cool feeling.....

well he thought about it, thought he would like to take part in the current festival, realizing about Phil May and the great Pretty things album SF Sorrow....Keith is the one who turned me on to the SF Sorrow album a few years ago....he has fantastic taste in music and is very musically adventuorus...he has turned me on to many, many great artists/bands over the years.......broadened my musical horizons...thanks dude...

Thursday after supper Keith was laying on the couch working out a drum pattern on garage band on his iPad....then he headed upstairs to the attic/music room and worked for a few hours.....the next day after supper he went back up....I could hear him working on some vocals and the lovely fuzz guitar tone...it sounded kinda good...he came down at around 10:00 and said he was finished and the song was mixed and mastered and did I want to have a listen....ok, upstairs I go.....hit play.....holy sheeet man...I couldn't believe my ears....perfection....nailed it perfectly...I was gobsmacked with how good it sounded.....and in such a short amount of time...what the heck...you some kind of Todd Rungren wizard or what...spectacular....totally nailed the late 60's sound and vibe......astonishing really....what an ear...

Good, great, awesome and brilliant job Keith....afterwards I listened to the original and I have to say I like this version better.....totally nailed it.

Holy shit, dude!

I know this song and the album, and your cover is fantastic! Great attention paid to all the little details (that bass is balls-on), everything is perfect from vocals right down to all the guitars and Mellotron bits.

Absolutely love it!
