There are songs that require a lot of work to set up ... and well, this one, I did it in two strokes of a spoon (of creme Mont Blanc) it is true that I know it well ... it's one of the only songs whose lyrics I know by heart. :)
In short, Ubu Roi is a theatre piece by Afred Jarry published in 1896, Jean Christophe Averty had directed it for French television in 1964 (...there was only one black and white channel at that time!). and Dick Annegarn made a song about it in 1974.
for english speaking friends who would like to discover the piece, there is a translation in english

, as well as an english video version on you tube

and here is my little clip

Aha, a big Pere Ubu fan here! I discovered Pere Ubu in my youth when I became acquainted with the Theatre of the Absurd after I acted in a production of La Cantatrice Chauve by Ionesco in French (yes, in the original French). That led me to Jarry and Ubu and I read all three Ubu books (in English though).
So I wasn't sure what to expect here...... but this was wacky and fun. I love the kazoo, and there is a slightly ridiculous feel to this which captures some of the essence of Ubu. It's hard to translate Ubu into English (translators always struggle with the swearing) and my French isn't good enough to get a real sense of the lyrics (which sound superb in French!) but I think I got enough.
I loved the production on this one as well, everything came over really well and I really enjoyed listening to this. It brought back some happy and absurd memories!
PS Of course there is always the band Pere Ubu, another big favourite of mine. Do you know them.....?

That's great, I hadn't seen that. David Thomas is wonderful, a fabulous voice and very creative.
