i have been trying to master this one on the guitar all week, but my stubby little fingers are not deft enough for the chord changes.
so in the meantime i played it on garageband's virtual guitar, but i will continue to try and master it on my real guitar.
so a wee tribute to the master.

It doesn't matter how much virtual or real, this version is absolutely genuine and true.
I really enjoyed it.

Great tribute James,
Love this number,
Really well done.....

I confess that I don't really know the work or Leonard Cohen. I do know the song a little, though, and your rendition is really nice. It's one of those where I can hear you staring into middle distance as you sing it, entirely connected only to the song.
virtual or not, you can't argue with the results. This sounds great - super cover Jim. Love the vocals, spot on.

...First thing that I thought of by listening to this cover is: woh good sound of guitar :)
Later your singing is very pleasant et bonne interpretation
awesome job with this arrangement ~ and your voice definitely adds the right feel to this song.... will have the vibes all day long ~
Back for more James, Just loving this one.....
Alex
I'm loving this rendition, but I can't help but be gobsmacked at how that virtual guitar sounds. What's the dealio with that? Do you just choose "finger picking" and then choose the tempo and chords, or is there a lot more to it?
Nice post. I'm digging the understated vocals.

The virtual guitar in GarageBand has four different guitars. An acoustic, a jangly semi acoustic, a heavy metal guitar and a roots rock style guitar.
For this I used the acoustic.
The guitar can be set up in a number of different ways. You can set it up as a normal guitar and play the individual strings like a proper guitar bending and muting the strings etc. Or you can set it up to play chords. It comes with preset chords but can be changed to practically any chord. In chord format you can strum and pick the strings for each individual chord or as I have done here use one of four preset strum/arpeggio settings.
Each of the four guitars have four separate patterns or styles if you like. There are also lots of other things you can do in the note mode like choosing different scales etc for playing lead parts. For someone like me with wee fat fingers it's great. Tho I'd much prefer to be able to play this authentically on my guitar.
It's a great writing tool too, I have used it to write chord progressions but then played those progressions on my real guitar. Being careful to pick chords I can play.

Imagine a new liquor store that has recently opened. It has 8,000 different wines, 3,000 spirits, and 2,500 kinds of beer all in stock. Imagine you went there yesterday. Now imagine you just read your post...
What I' saying is your post totally hurt my head.

Your description/analogy of GarageBand is better than mine.

I don't visit very often on the Cover songs, so I've totally missed this gem. Excellent version of a classic!
love this song you do a cover of it love it . there was a problem that only about 30 seconds played , this has happened on other recordings I have listened to .I don't know what the problem is but i'm sure its something to do at my end , would have loved to have listened to more of you song but it just kept stopping ,great sound though , cheers tonyc
Regardless of how you got there, this sounds very good to my ears. Thanks for sharing and thanks for the GB hints. I have it on my phone but haven't even opened it (after a couple of years of carrying it around.) Maybe this will get me moving on it. A great songwriting too, indeed.
Virtual guitar or not, this really works. The key is the vocals which are perfect for the song. The arrangement nicely complements your voice and is clearly there but not at all obtrusive.
Very nicely done James !

This is a fine cover James!. Nice to hear you still at it and getting better all the time. I thought the guitar was great. lovely tone.
hoping to visit Leonard Cohen's house in Hydra this summer, if all goes well will post some pics of my pilgrimage here.
Nouvelle ecoute très agréable, James
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waCcjatn48gI was there, awesome show!..... for my 60th birthday, my daughter had offered me the ticket to the concert, on July 9th 2008, at the Théatre antique de Fourvier in Lyon.
What a musician and what a choir of 3 singers there was!
Loving this, songs that sound so simple can be so hard, but you captured the feel and mood of this classic. A fine tribute. Willie
Excellent cover OH I'll
