This one was composed by Sy Johnson.
Harry Carney, who died in 1974, had been for over 40 years the baritone saxophonist in the Duke Ellington band.
"For Harry Carney" is in the "Changes Two" album, by Charles Mingus.
My personal story behind this cover:
it's quite likely that most of you don't know this tune, but for me it's a special one. In my "musical" life I've been so lucky to listen live to almost all jazz great musicians, in the Seventies and Eighties, form Miles Davis to Ornette Coleman, from Don Cherry to Stan getz, to Chet Baker, Gato Barbieri, Barney Kessell...: they all came here for concerts, Palermo was (and is still today) a very "jazzy" city, and they played in a small jazz club, it was called "The Brass Group":

Well, in 1976 Charles Mings had here five concerts, and in one of these I was right in front of him, in the first row. By many points of view it was probably one of my most intense musical experiences, and I will never forget the beginning of the concert, when Danny Richmond began to play on drums that strange latin rhythm...the intro of "For Harry Carney"...
Techincal stuff:
drums - piano: BIAB backing realtracks
bass: myself (...may good old Charles forgive me...) on an Ibanez GSR180 electric bass
trumpet: Kontakt library via a Godin ACS SA - > Boss GP-10 (used as guitar-to-MIDI interface, quite good performance, almost the same as the Fishman TriplePlay, IMO)
guitar: Yamaha SA2200

I'm blown away by this! The trumpet sound is astonishing! I'm definitely going to have to get into this guitar-midi stuff. You're giving me serious GAS!!!
The performances you've turned in here are utterly superb! It sounds so pro in every way. I'm not too fa,iliar with Mingus's work from this later period of his career, but I definitely recognise this track, and you've done a brilliant job of it!

I'm not familiar with the original, or familiar much with Mingus at all. The groove grabbed me right away – the bass, the percussion. But when that trumpet sound came in...
Reminds me of something someone said about BB King once: "He only played one note. But what a note!"
I listened three times in a row. I guess I need to educate myself on Mingus now.
