Title: using the MBR as a monitor?
Post by: Glenn Mitchell on April 20, 2009, 07:48:54 PM
I'm in a band with 11 others and we are having monitor problems at gigs.
Not enough channels for one but the result is I am usually left with a bad blend at the gig or no sound from the members I need to hear.
The master mixer can give me the final output ending at a 1/4" jack and I can wear a head set or buds to hear it but need a volume control at my end.
I though I'd try the MBR for that, just as I would monitor my guitar.
Any problems you can see?

Don't forget you have to turn off auto shut first. There is no problem I can see but there are other solutions. If volume is all you want to control even a simple resistance potenciometer would do the job.

The new Roland M-48 Live Personal Mixer was designed to allow each musician to control his own mix.

See video and product info at http://lib2.roland.co.jp/rec/RSG/en/M-48/index.html (http://lib2.roland.co.jp/rec/RSG/en/M-48/index.html)

No doubt it's overkill in your case and way too expensive, but it's nice to dream about. Maybe if you sell lots of t-shirts and CDs at your gigs?  ;)

If you only want to control the overall volume to your headphones or ear buds, an inexpensive inline volume control would do the trick:

Of course, these will only attenuate the signal, not boost it. So you'll have to make sure that your feed from the mixer is loud enough for your needs.

Thanks for that. Yes the M-48 is perfect and I actually asked for that precise functionality not knowing it exists but it's probably out of the budget for the short term at least..
The attenuators might work and they are nice and small but wouldn't the MBR provide both boost and cut options? That was what I was hoping for.
We are going to try it at the  practice next Sunday in any case.
If it works I might put Velcro on the back and stick it to  my guitar Lol.

Or you could buy the Boss BA-M-BR Micro BR Case and put it on your guitarstrap or in your belt.

cheers

Yes, the Micro BR should do the job. The Line Input will probably be the best match for the mixer feed, so you'll need some adapters. Is the mixer output stereo or mono? Check the input reverb send levels. I believe the Line In defaults to 0, which is what you'll want. But the guitar input defaults to 15. And, you'll need to adjust the input sensitivity so that the OVER indicator doesn't light to avoid distortion. If it still lights with the sensitivity at minimum, then you'll have to reduce the mixer output.

Excellent tips thanks for those. I have dozens of adapters collected over the years so that won't be a problem. I'll be sure to check on the stereo vs mono.

you mean you havent developed ESP with your mates yet? LOL... we've overcome the monitor issue thru sheer determination and practice. somehow even improv situations work out in the end... just have to move around the stage as necessary to hear what needs to be heard...

and for pete's sake, just crank everyone up really loud. it worked for the Sex Pistols!

We have 12 in the band, 4 of which are horns. My unfortunate position is right beside the lead horn on one side, in front of the drums and beside the bass on the other. Can't hear myself think. And yes I'm cranked up.

This might be a role for the silicon case.  They are not expensive but they hold the MBR very securely.  Putting velcro or some other fixative on the silicon case and attaching that to wherever might do the job without having to deface the shiny surface of the MBR.

Yes a good thought, tks. I'll look around for one. I have no problem with velcro on the back tho. The glue doesn't hold all that well in the heat however. Maybe a couple of lag bolts thru the Jazzmaster and a couple of plumber's straps would do it. :)

Hah!...The Red and Green show!!! That guy is my hero!!

I've been thinking about this, Glenn.... Sorry, I can't think of anything yet that doesn't involve spending lots of money lol....I'd love to have a nice wireless IEM(in-ear monitor)set-up...But, man....your looking at close to $1,000!! I'm sure the MBR would work, but I'd be worried about it getting hot for being on long periods of time, etc...But it's made by Boss, so I tend to think it should hold up...Oh, and I hope you have the power supply~

Good luck with your band!! Sounds like you guys would be cool to watch with all of those members...I'd love to hear you guys!!

Thanks guys. It is fun I guess mostly, but with more members there is more politics and I do have a hard time with that. I try to remember the good times and I 'm trying to work in more improvising (My particular passion) which the "readers"  don't encourage. They like it to be "down" and secure. I like it to be edgy and new.
