James,

Thank you for the tribute of thisgreat french composer singer

there is, these days ,  an intrusion of some French song, it seems  :)

Dance on me (Claude Nougaro) , Ne me quitte pas,( Jacques Brel ) port of Amsterdam (Jacques Brel) pleasure of love (Plaisir d'amour , unknown)...

And soon I put my song idol " the blues of the dentist " of Boris Vian and Henri Salvador

James your inetrpretation is great( and it seems that the translation in English is rather faithful has the original

the translation was done by  Mort Shuman. who worked with brel on Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris. a musical revue of the songs of Jacques Brel.  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Brel_is_Alive_and_Well_and_Living_in_Paris

Bowie's studio version was released as the B-side to his single "Sorrow" in October 1973. (This recording may have been made in the summer of 1973 or in late 1971. Brel originally stated that he didn't want to "give his songs to fags", and refused to meet Bowie, who nevertheless admired him.

I'm more familiar with the Scott Walker version, but I do also know the David Bowie version (haven't heard Jacques Brel's original, though) - you did a fine job evincing the atmosphere that I've gotten from those versions. I kept expecting an accordion to jump in!
