Title: Emmenne moi (Graeme Alwright) in english take me home (johnny Cash)
Post by: Jean Pierre on December 11, 2015, 10:44:45 AM
it is graeme Alwright's song a new zealand singer exiled in France since seventies
Alwright Graeme was one of pillars of the folk movement in France with other expatriates as Steve Waring,  Roger Mason,Gary Peterson

This song is an adaptation of " Take me home" of johnny Cash   It s a Hobo song and the French  lyrics are rather close to  original song;

I put a next time the lyrics in english and french bilingual can judge it  :)

I would play this song for using a Autoharp: it s an old instrument not usual...and a horror for the tuning :( :( :(

you can see autoharp in picture in allowed file

Didn't understand a word, but that didn't spoil my enjoyment one little bit. Love the sound of that autoharp, and the accordion in the background just adds to the cool French vibe of the piece. Bravo!

Very cool. The suspect tuning adds a lot of character.

I was given a nice autoharp years ago. I remember buy a tool at Home Depot that fit the pegs and painstakingly tuned that damn thing for quite a while. I don't think I've used it since. I have dreams of tuning it to some chord and using it like the sympathetic strings on a sitar, but I'm afraid of tuning it again.

Loved the ending of this, by the way.

Actually I can tune in auto harp in about half an hour with a good chromatic tuner and a tune wrench.  Tuning wrenches are $5-7 dollars on Amazon and I would encourage you to get one if you don't already have one. I like the song a lot, your voice, guitar and accordion are sweet but that harp is just a bit too out on the upper strings for my ear.

I put my harp on the table with my iPhone (pano tuner app-free and the absolute best tuner) next to it and just go string by string. The strings are named right there on the side. took me maybe an hour the first time but now 30 min. easy. I do hope I never break a string!

I've never recorded with mine but have thought about it often. I use mine a few times a year for teaching purposes and have used in my live show many times. I rigged up a strap but I really find it uncomfortable to play, cool for the audience (kids and families) but miserable for me.

I do like your tune a lot and if you can tune your Autoharp a bit tighter it will be really great.
Rock on!

I didn't know this one, but I like it so much, Jean-Pierre.

Great combination of instruments here, and that autoharp sounds splendid!

the comparative lyyrics in original song by Johnny Cash..and cover in french by Graeme Alwright

as you see It is rather faithfully adapted in French ... just the name of cities are changed

Nantes, Besançon, Brest Monaco LaRochelle in french , Boston, LA Frisco, NY Washington in english...

Johnny Cash lyrics:

Well I've been from Boston to LA seen Boulder Dam and Frisco Bay
I seen New York City and Washington
Seen Montreal and Saskatchewan and Rhode Island
And I've worked in three all night service stations and I drove a truck

Take me home my heart is heavy and my feet are sore
Take me home I don't wanna roam no more

Well I slept all night in a water trough
Had the flu and the croup and the whoopin' cough
Had the mumps and the measles and the seven years itch
And I can't count the times that I've had a cold and a sore throat
Not to mention all the times that I cut my fingers on a sardine can

Take me home my heart is heavy...

Well I can just see 'em all now just a gatherin' round
Mama's supper table when the sun goes down
And my good old pappy when the blessing is said
Fillin' up his plate with black eyed peas and all that stuff and side meat
And a great big hunk of my dear sweet mama's hot buttered cornbread

Take me home my heart is heavy...
Take me home my heart is heavy...

Graeme Alwright lyrics:

Bien cuites
Et les dimanches Maman coupant une tranche
De tarte aux pommes

bye All friends

Thanks to all and good Christmas to; the community

Hook you are perfectly right it misses some adjustment of tone on certain acute string and it rings (involuntarily) little as a piano junk(dance hall) and it can hurt  musiciane who have the absolute pitch.. :-[ :-[ :-[

Autoharp is very special instrument, very easy to play in strumming.....but like for all instruments there is some person virtuoso for this instrument like for example Karen Mueller in this irish tune

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nbKApkQe2Jk

and her the autoharp is very well  tuning (and it seems custom bars of chords???

an other example in this video of you tube the chords of HOTEL CALIFORNIA are very  pleasant to play with auto harp

...and for Bruno, Silent night doit etre aussi agreable à jouer  :-[ :-[
