Recorded 05/04/1978
TX - 14/04/1978
My cover of the probably best known Only Ones song. I finally got time to do a vocal last night. I also re-recorded the middle solo, which is now a bit less clunky and fat fingerd than the first take was.
My daughter has a book called Aliens Love Underpants. It has a space ship sound on one of the buttons which I sampled and played over the start of the guitar solo and again at the end of the song.
Anyway,hope you enjoy my bit of power-punk / pop-rock / whatever...

The Only Ones

gaun yersel nick. fabulous version. really great work lots of detail and you have got peter perret's voice perfectly. love it piepod bound.
Don't know the song, but I love this kind of catchy punky power-pop. The solo alone is awesome, but the whole performance and production is outstanding. Such a tight and carefully-crafted arrangement.
An easy one to love!
Yeah!!! Absolutely fantastic Nick. I'd shortlisted this as one of the songs I wanted to do from the Peel Sessions (time permitting - so many songs, so little time) Anyway I was chuffed to see it was you who'd done it as the song suits your voice to a T. Excellent guitar playing too! You should be well proud of this one..
Pete ;D
This has attitude in bucket loads. I really enjoyed this tune, had my foot tapping along. Very cool. I vaguely remember the original.

Cool song nick, great version ,love it.
New to me brother & really good stuff.
Rock on!
Great song Nick, well played and well recorded. well done.........Alex
Nick, that was truly awesome, loved every bit of it, couldnt have been better!
I'd forgotten this one, but as soon as I saw the title it all came flooding back.
Fabulous cover.
Love the mix, bass tones are superb, vocal has just the right amount of sneer. Excellent excellent track.
I'm back in the student union!
Fabulous Nick.
How can one not love this?!? It's a hit!! Love the attitude, the performance, the fantastic guitarwork! A Tele I presume?
Well done nick! Well done indeed
I keep coming back to this for another listen - Its so good !
Nick, what do you use for your drum track? I've been listening to the drums on this and there's plenty of changes and it just sounds spot on. I use the built in patterns on my BOSS 600 but often find I can't really get the pattern I want and tend to keep using the same verse and fill patterns on everything I do. Frustrating really because there are songs I'd like to do but can't because I can't get a suitable backing
Pete
Thanks for the comments everyone, I appreciate it.
The drums are built in GarageBand, I get quite anal about them and even now when I listen Barack there are things I'd like to change. But it is possible to get pretty much what you want. I do also use a drum machine app called DM1 which has loads of kits / sounds, but not on this one.
You're right Geir, it's my Tele, which is actually an '82 Tokai Breezysound which I've owned nearly30 years, now.
Like this one Nick
you have the sound down to a T
can just see you struttin' your stuff on BBC2
Tommy
Great take on a timeless classic in my opinion.
So many different parts to admire here, but the stand outs for me were the excellent vocal and that driving punchy bass tone.

My daughter also has that book, and I inwardly groan whenever she selects it for bedtime reading as it takes an age to read and I inevitably miss the start of the 7.45pm footy game on the telly that evening!
Thanks Tommy & TW

LOL. It's not bedtime reading in our house, we're still at the That's not my Robot / Farm Peekaboo stage. Strictly daytime for Aliens Love Underpants!

That should have said "when I listen back..." Stupid autocorrections. Then my phone wouldn't let me change it.
This is a beauty Nick what a pleasure to wake up to ;D
I don't know the original but this is great.
Paul
Fabulous cover! I heard the original first time in the 90's on MTV's 120 Minutes and fell love in it immideately! Top notch job, Nick!
On this day Bump. I think this has got to be my all time favourite cover on Songcrafters - I often go back for a listen. Classic ODH !
Pete
