Title: Crackling noises on the BR80
Post by: Hilary on July 22, 2013, 02:54:59 AM
I'm getting a lot of crackling noises on the BR - it's running on batteries, so it's not the lead and it's not the headphones because the meter still shows the disturbance when I unplug the headphones.

Anyone got any bright ideas as that's my technical expertise exhausted?

First, try to eliminate the possibility of handling noise or an intermittent connection that's triggered by movement. So place the BR on a firm surface and don't touch it. Is the noise still visible on the meters? If so, is it just as consistent as it is when you're holding the BR? Try just the Line In too (turn the REC LEVEL control all the way down).

Next, determine if it occurs on all inputs. I have a suspicion that you're hearing it when the internal mics are connected. Try disconnecting them by plugging a cable into the guitar/mic jack. If the noise goes away, then you've obviously got a problem with the internal mics or the related circuits. Try using an external mic instead.

Does it occur in all modes (Live Rec, MTR, and eBand)? I'm not sure what that will tell us but it might be interesting to know.

If it occurs on all inputs and there's no intermittent connection you can find, then you'll probably have to send it to Roland for repair. It's probably under warranty. I believe the warranty in the UK is for three years.

OK thanks 64 - I hadn't tried it with an external mic, fingers crossed it's something simple  ???

Does the sound come even before you press record? I'm guessing no :)

What you also should check is that you havent accidentally chosen a guitarpatch (with distortion/overdrive) as that certainly will give a lot of noise from the mics.

I do hope nothing is wrong with the unit !

Thanks Geir - it's the same patch I always use for vocals, it my own called Haylie (ooooooh get me).

I'll be brokenhearted if I have to send it away :(

Is it likely to be some interference from the neighbours, like a baby monitor or something because it sounds like a dodgy cable to me without the cable if you know what I mean? I'm going to try it at different times of the day (!)

:D :D I program all my own patches too and then call them (stupidly) 'My Vocal', 'My Tele', 'My Bass', 'My Strat', etc.
I mean, who else's patches are they gonna be, other than 'mine'...

It took me bloody ages to think of what to call my vocal patch . . .
