Title: This Town Ain't Big Enough - ODH vs ORH - Suggestfest
Post by: ODH on July 15, 2013, 01:29:16 AM
As suggested by ORH
I 'finished' (like it'll ever be finished) the This Town Ain't Big Enough instrumental. Jim offered to add a vocal and mighty fine it is too. Thanks for the colab, great fun.

Yowser! What a cracker! Such an intricate and difficult track to play - or even to dissect, this was one of my childhood favourites, just stunning. And the vocal: there's a lot of words to get into the right order, kudos here James.
All round fantastic cheesy greatness. I love it!

Excellent! I've always loved this song and you guys have done a great cover of it. I would image that it was a tricky vocal to do but it turned out great. Could be a bit louder in the mix though. I found it a bit hard to hear in some places. And there's a faint hint of a falsetto backing vocal that I would have liked to hear a bit louder.

Wow, what a cover of a song that isn't exactly easy to do justice to.
The music is amazing and a brilliant vocal Jim, absolutely outstanding!

I commented over on alonetone , didn't realise James had done the vox , bloody great cover , such a great live band , anyone watching the basement series on Sky Arts will have seen them do an amazing live set , they are far removed from their TOTP chart image days

Fucking brilliant. Love the original, and I love this. A tough one to take on musically and vocally, but you both nailed it. Really like the arrangement too. Fantastic!

Thanks all and thanks Jim for the vocal. I could never have managed a natural sounding vocal like that for this.
I'm actually quite impressed with GarageBand piano, sounds really authentic, I think. My next GB project will be a string quartet arrangement, I fancy.

I'm really starting to get to grips with Garageband now. I avoided it for a long time, but it's a great tool - and as you say, the piano sounds are excellent. I've used it in two ways: to compose songs which I then add regular instruments too, and to enhance songs that I've written on guitar. I prefer the cello, violin and viola on Thumbjam though.
On the evidence of this song alone you've REALLY got yourself sorted on Garageband!
I'm currently indulging in all the vintage synth sounds for some 80's electro-pop :-)

That's necessity being the mother of invention again. Don't hardly get a look in on my guitar and stuff since the baby came. Weird thing is when I did get a rare couple of hours on Saturday I spent it on GarageBand anyway.
My mum-in-law died a couple of weeks ago so I'm just catching up on what I've missed. Hope to get started on my suggestion from ORH this weekend.
Pete
Thanks Pete. I'm sorry to hear about your mother in law. Hope you and your wife are okay.
