Title: The Official SuggestFest suggestions topic
Post by: 64Guitars on June 28, 2013, 07:29:21 PM
There are still two days of voting left, so things could change, but it looks very much like SuggestFest will win for the Artists/Covers festival. A couple of people have said that they're anxious to post their suggests even though the poll hasn't ended yet, and a few people have already posted suggestions in other topics. So I decided to make this topic to keep all of the suggestions together in one place. I've marked it "unofficial" for now. If SuggestFest wins the vote, I'll change it to "official". If you've already posted suggestions in other topics, please repeat them here. If you'd rather wait till the vote is official, that's fine too.
Update - 2013-07-30 - This topic is getting quite long, so I thought it would be good to summarize the suggestions here.

Remember when you ran away and I got on my knees and begged you Not to leave because I'd go berserk? Well, You left me anyhow and then the Days got worse and worse and now you See I've gone completely out of my mind. And,
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa. They're coming to take me away, ho ho, he he, ha ha, To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time And I'll be happy to see those nice young Men in their clean white coats and They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!
You thought it was a joke and so you Laughed, you laughed! When I had said that Losing you would make me flip my lid - right? You know you laughed, I heard you laugh, You laughed, you laughed and laughed, and then you Left, but now you know I'm utterly mad. And,
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa. They're coming to take me away, ho ho, he he , ha ha, To the happy home with trees and flowers and chirping birds And basket weavers who sit and smile And twiddle their thumbs and toes And they're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!
I cooked your food, I cleaned your house And this is how you pay me back For all my kind, unselfish loving deeds? Huh? Well, you just wait--they'll find you yet And when they do they'll put you in the ASPCA you mangy mutt! And,
They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa. They're coming to take me away, ho ho, he he, ha ha, To the funny farm, where life is beautiful all the time And I'll be happy to see those nice young Men in their clean white coats and They're coming to take me away, ha-haaa!

I've though about it before, to be honest. Would have to be a lower register though. I've got all these music making aps on my iPhone now, need a project. I get no time to do home recording now.
Question is, how you gonna get through all those return challenges though? I'm going to challenge you to the third song that shuffles onto my ipod; 1. War - Frankie Goes to Hollywood 2. Ilse of Her - Klaxons 3. Ben E. King - Supernatural Thing
Ooh, that is a good tune for us. This might actually happen.
Thanks for the suggestion. Along those lines, it would fun to do the full electric version of "Still Alive and Well."
Blooby
Ha! That was the first one that popped in my head but i thought you guys like doing acoustic, but hey if you want to do Still Alive and well, that be really amazing. I`d like to hear your electric chops on that. One of my fave albums ever!

Now I got that damn song rattling around in my head - There's an easy listening station I tune to sometimes and they play that one frequently. What is it with easy listening, I just caught a buddy of mine tuning in to the same station the other day. And you would never even suspect...
I appreciate all the suggestions I've got and will try to do as many as I can cope with at the moment. (I've already started research on a couple of them :D)

I would like to suggest that Bruno does a cover of this wonderful song:
Oh I beg you, can I follow Oh I ask you why not always Be the ocean where unravel Be my only, be the water and I'm wading You're my river running high, run deep run wild
I I follow, I follow you deep sea baby I follow you I I follow, I follow you, dark boom honey I follow you
He a message, I'm the runner He's the rebel, I'm the daughter waiting for you You're my river running high, run deep run wild
I I follow, I follow you deep sea baby I follow you
I I follow, I follow you, dark boom honey I follow you

Rob (facemask93) do you have time for some suzzane vega? I was thinking on the queen and the soldier, but any from her debut album would be awesome. Swansong - what about some indie song? But you have to sing! I was thinking on pavement. His singing is quite relaxed and you would fit well.

I haven't got a lot of time at the moment but I really appreciate being included and should get to some suggestions in August, hopefully :)
Geir - Valley Girl (I'll find the time to do the speaking bit, if Ted's in)
ORH - Walking After Midnight - a great suggestion for me - I've already done it (one of my early SC ones) https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=15409.msg192185#msg192185 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=15409.msg192185#msg192185)
Bruno - Hummingbird - if you want to play it honey, I'll sing it!
Kenny Mac - Dream a Little Dream of Me - I love the idea of doing this one and it'll definitely be top of my list :)
My suggestion is for Holdempok - absolutely anything (vox and acoustic) ;D ::) ;D

I'm not familiar with the song or the band. But I had a listen and it sounds pretty cool, so I'd love to give it a try. However, it depends on how much time I can find to work on it, as I've already received three other suggestions. I've never managed to do four songs in a festival before. I'm usually doing good if I get one song done. But there's a first time for everything. If I can find time, I'd be happy to do this one. Thanks for the suggestion.

I would really like to hear a Demonised version of Michael Schenker Groups "Into the arena". I used to play this live, but I think my fingers are too rusty now :D
...and possibly Haylie with the vocal. Let's have a three way.
Last Splash is one of my favorite albums. I couldn't see which track it was on the phone. Was expecting Cannonball or maybe Divine Hammer (odh is One Divine Hammer from the song), but this is cool also.

At the moment I don't get near my recording stuff (new baby) so I'm having to rely on Necessity being the mother of Invention. I will do what I can though, I'm getting to grips with GarageBand on my phone.

A Norwegian Viking would make me very happy if he and his Norwegian Viking brother would cover this one by Golden Earring (if they have time, that is):
Bloody Buccaneers Artist : Golden Earring From the Album: Bloody Buccaneers (1991)
Hey-la hey-la hey-lo Hey-la hey-la hey-lo
Scratched the morning with a diamond Bucked the storm like a whore last night I'm goin' after that Spanish gallion Skull, bones and dangerous I got a tattoo big, always saved my life A burnin' heart with a stabbin' knife We swear by the bread and the wine More serious than any divine
Hey-la hey-la hey-lo Mexican silver, shining gold Hey-la hey-la hey-lo Jewels, pearls and rhum in the hold
I'm the alligator-law chewin' on your bait Ransackin loodin' you from stern to gate Last night I saw you against the moon My beautiful princess white as snow Nothing wrong about leaning on a shoulder When you're outta breath Ho ho let me escort you And take you to my cabin down below
Ah, you bring the devil out in me Ah you make me sinn baby sinn baby Ah, you bring the devil out in me Again and again Oh yeah bloody Buccaneer
The crew's plottin' sharp for the prize So I lock the door and leave a note outside Any man break into this room Better prepare for death and doom I had my cutlasss on her neck Warm and white I told her I'm a pirate from the Skeleton Isles I'll never forget the sweet things she said
Ah, you bring the devil out in me Ah you make me sinn baby sinn baby Ah, you bring the devil out in me Again and again Oh yeah bloody Buccaneer
This is actually the second time I've suggested this one for Geir. The first time was in 2010 for PirateFest, but he didn't have time to do it then. So maybe he can do it for SuggestFest. But no pressure, Geir. I know you probably have lots of other requests and might not have time to do this one. So I'll understand if you don't get around to it.

Kenny Mac did a great cover of Roy Orbison's "Crying" (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=17856.0) for DeadRockstarFest, so I'd like him to cover "Running Scared" if he has time (after he does "Hunting High and Low" for Geir).
Running Scared (written by Roy Orbison and Joe Melson)
Just runnin' scared, each place we go So afraid that he might show Yeah, runnin' scared, what would I do? If he came back and wanted you
Just runnin' scared, feelin' low Runnin' scared, you'll love him so Just runnin' scared, afraid to lose If he came back, which one would you choose?
Then all at once, he was standing there So sure of himself, his head in the air My heart was breaking, which one would it be? You turned around and walked away with me

I'd like to hear Hook cover "When I'm Cleaning Windows".
When I'm Cleaning Windows George Formby - written by George Formby, Harry Gifford and Frederick E. Cliffe - as recorded September 27, 1936 by George Formby (1904-1961)
Now I go cleanin' windows to earn an honest bob For a nosy parker it's an interestin' job
Now it's a job that just suits me A window cleaner you would be If you can see what I can see When I'm cleanin' windows
Honeymoonin' couples too You should see them bill 'n coo You'd be surprised at things they do When I'm cleanin' windows
In my profession I'll work hard But I'll never stop I'll climb this blinkin' ladder Till I get right to the top
The blushin' bride, she looks divine The bridegroom he is doin' fine I'd rather have his job than mine When I'm cleanin' windows
The chambermaids' sweet names I call It's a wonder I don't fall My mind's not on my work at all When I'm cleanin' windows
I know a fella, such a swell He has a thirst, that's plain to tell I've seen him drink his bath as well When I'm cleanin' windows
Oh, in my profession I'll work hard But I'll never stop I'll climb this blinkin' ladder Till I get right to the top
Pyjamas lyin' side by side Ladies nighties I have spied I've often seen what goes inside When I'm cleanin' windows
------ banjo ukulele ------
Now there's a famous talkie queen She looks a flapper on the screen She's more like eightie than eighteen When I'm cleanin' windows
She pulls her hair all down behind Then pulls down her... never mind And after that pulls down the blind When I'm cleanin' windows
In my profession I'll work hard But I'll never stop I'll climb this blinkin' ladder Till I get right to the top
An old maid walks around the floor She's so fed up, one day I'm sure She'll drag me in and lock the door When I'm cleanin' windows
When I'm cleanin' windows
George usually played a banjo ukulele, but here he is playing it on a conventional uke.
Ron Sexsmith is awesome, and this is an awesome (and short!) song! I've been away for a week, then I'm away for anothre 2 weeks shortly, so I'll see if I can squeeze some time in. Great suggestion though :-)

Would it be possible to have some kind of extension on this suggestfest, still got 2-3 tracks which have been requested by others but due to holidays and wot not most of August is going to be a right off for recording time.
Maybe others are in the same boat????

As with any festival, you can send me a PM before the festival ends (August 31) to let me know which song you're currently working on for the festival and don't expect to complete on time. You can then take as much time as you need to complete it (within reason) and I will add it to the jukebox whenever you post it.
The idea is simple. I don't want to continue adding new songs to past festivals after they've ended. But I recognize that people may start working on a song during the festival and the festival might end before they get a chance to finish it. So, to allow people to finish songs they started during the festival, I'll add the finished song to the previous festival as long as I was advised of it during the festival. Once the festival ends, if you decide to start working on another song, it won't be accepted for the festival because it wasn't started during the festival. Of course, you can always post any song you like. It's only a question of whether it will be added to the festival jukebox or not. If I know that you started working on it during the festival because you sent me a PM during the festival, I'll add it. But if you didn't send me a PM, then I have no way of knowing when you started the song. I'm sure most people would be honest about it but there will always be a few who will lie just to get another song in the festival. That's why I need the proof of a PM sent to me during the festival.
And please don't send me a list of 6 songs that you're "working on". ::) I'll accept one song without question. Any more than that and you'll have to convince me that you really have started working on them. Most people only work on one song at a time. So if you've started more than one song, you'll have to provide reasons why you didn't just finish one before starting the next. And, just to keep people honest, I might ask you to send me mp3s of the unfinished songs if you claim to be working on several.
Many of us have received several great suggestions for SuggestFest and we'd like to do them all, but we know we won't have time. We'll just have to skip some songs, or post them later as regular posts and not submit them for SuggestFest. For example, I've received 5 suggestions, so far. They're all great songs and I'd like to do all 5 of them. But I doubt if I'll complete more than one before the festival ends. I started one at the beginning of the festival and recorded a couple of tracks, but I haven't found the time and motivation to get back to it. Hopefully, I'll be able to finish it before the festival ends, but I might need an extension (I'll send myself a PM ;)). I'll still probably do the remaining 4 songs eventually, but they'll just be regular song posts, not festival submissions (unless they happen to fit the current festival at the time). Of course, I'll still acknowledge the people who made the suggestions in my post. In that sense, my songs will be part of SuggestFest in a small way. But they won't be added to the SuggestFest jukebox and they won't get the SuggestFest banner or message icon. To me, getting the songs done and posted is the important thing. Having them in the SuggestFest jukebox would be nice but it's not a big deal. People will hear the songs whether they're in the jukebox or not.
Update: We've decided to include SuggestFest as a choice in the poll for the Sep/Oct 2013 Artsist/Covers festival. See my next message in this topic.

Within minutes of posting my last message, I started to have second thoughts. So I put it to the admin team and oldrottenhead came up with a good idea. What we'll do is include SuggestFest as one of the choices in the next vote. If enough people want to continue with SuggestFest for another two months instead of starting a new Artists/Covers festival, then that's what we'll do. That way, you'll be able to focus on completing the suggested songs rather than getting distracted by a new Artists/Covers festival. Of course, we'll still have a new Theme/Genre festival, so you could get a bit distracted by that. You'll just have to decide what you want to focus on.
If SuggestFest doesn't win the vote, then late submissions will be treated like any other festival, as described above. That is, I'll only add your late submission to the festival if you advised me by PM before August 31st that it will be late.
We've still got a month to go before SuggestFest ends and we vote for the next two festivals. So try to get as many songs completed as you can. And start thinking about whether you want to continue SuggestFest until the end of October or start a new Artists/Covers festival instead. Voting for the Sep/Oct festivals will probably start around August 26th.

What if the suggestfest (which is clearly a winner!) linked with the normal festivals (suggestfest deadrockstar III / suggestfest songs about buildings/ whatever...)?
It opens some nasty opportunities like "I suggest X makes an original about the Talking Heads"...

I had an idea that revolves around the idea of a 'SuggestQuest'. Instead of a festival 'per-se', what if there was a board of suggestions that members could dip in and out of when the mood strikes or when another fellow member suggests 'a must do'. We all have periods when originals are blocked up in our calculation flowings, or we can't think of a cover to tackle and then an idea of a cover tickles us silly. EG. Nick/odh has suggested an Eels song for me to do, but through holiday/family commitments I'm gonna find it almost impossible to fit in although I really wanna do it. Sort of a rolling 'Fest, but substituting the 'Fest element with the 'Quest element. Or maybe just extending the SuggestFest is a simpler and better idea. Forgive the rambling, incoherent nature of this post, but I've just dropped 30mg of Valium..... 9{} and time is against me...

I think that's a great idea - the SuggestFest has breathed a lot of life into the site in what can be a 'slow' period over the summer, captured members' imagination and created new/potentially collabs. It would be great if we could continue it in some way.

We have something like that already. It's a topic started by Greeny back on November 4, 2008, where people listed the names of songs that they'd like to cover but, presumably, weren't able to because there were certain parts that they didn't know how to play or they didn't have the needed instruments. This topic is a great opportunity for people who want to collaborate with other members. Just browse through the topic to find a song that interests you, then contact the person who suggested it and propose a collaboration. Maybe I should move that topic to the Collaborations board and make it a sticky.
We could do something similar for suggestions. We'll just create a new topic for it in the General Discussion board and I'll make it a sticky topic so it's easy to find. Then people can post their suggestions in that topic.
One problem is that, as the topic grows to many pages in length, it will become time-consuming and confusing to browse through all of the suggestions. I'm finding that already with this topic for SuggestFest. It would be even worse if we created a new board for this purpose as there would be many topics in that board to browse through. So I think it's best to just have the one topic. The admin team could maintain a more concise listing of all of the suggestions in the first message of that topic. It would also be good if we could mark which suggestions have been done already.
But let's not start this new topic until SuggestFest ends, which could be the end of October if enough people vote for that. Until then, we should post our suggestions here in the official SuggestFest suggestions topic.

That should make it a lot easier to keep track of what's been suggested for you. Just look up your name in the left column. All of the songs suggested for you so far are listed to the right. I've also included a column that indicates if the song is done and links to the topic where it was posted.
Continue posting your suggestions here in this topic, as usual, and I'll try to keep the master list updated as new suggestions are posted. I'll also try to update the "Done" column as songs get posted for SuggestFest.
Creating the list was a huge job, so I wouldn't be surprised if I missed something or made a mistake or two. However, a few incomplete suggestions were left out intentionally as they didn't mention who was meant to do the songs, or they left out a song suggestion completely and only mentioned a member's name. Every suggestion must be for a specific song to be done by one or more specific Songcrafters members.
Also, be sure to include the song title and artist in the text of your message. A YouTube video on its own isn't enough because they can get removed from YouTube. This happened once already and there was no text in the message to indicate what the song was.
And don't suggest songs for yourself, not even as collabs. The idea is to suggest a song for someone else to do. And someone else will suggest a song for you to do. It's okay to suggest that several members collaborate on a song, as long as you're not one of them.

Nice song. There's a lot of good stuff from DM in this later period (later in my mind anyway). Would love to do several of their songs from this time, It's No Good, Dream On, Walking in My Shoes... Something's bubbling up in me for this one, though. Like my other Depeche Mode cover, there'll not be any synth though. Don't get the time anymore..

I love the synthy stuff you sometimes do so I'd like a cover of my favourite song by Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence. Always fancied doing it myself but I don't really do keyboards!
Progress update on this - I've finished the backer (in GarageBand), just needs vocals now. Gawd only knows when that'll be though.

I would very much like JS (Steelguitar) to do Le Pénitencier, Johnny Hallyday (I know you've got a version which is very popular, but I'd love to hear it in French) :D

Me again ;D (well if you don't ask, you don't get!)
I was thinking this morning, what would I like to hear Nick/ODH do - Tainted Love by Soft Cell (my husband's all time favourite song!) - that would be jolly D.

Tainted Love, eh? Interesting.
There's a few different versions of this song as well as the Soft Cell. There's the original northern soul version, and a nice one by Marilyn Manson, which I'm quite fond of.
The original Soft Cell is seminal for me also though.
I'll have a think about it.

Well, I'd really like someone to sing The Next Time, by Cliff Richard (yes, I know) - I love this song and it has special significance to my parents. Also, I really like the tone in Cliff's voice in the early years. So who to choose to do this one justice . . . Kari (Redler) of course (we'll all be swooning honey!)
The song starts at about 0:40 ish (it does slightly irritate me though the way Sir Cliff hangs on to his consonants in this)
Oh thanks Nick - it does indeed look a great choice but I'm not looking to record at the moment. I have done 1 Suggestfest but can't really afford to get distracted for a couple of weeks anyway (and I get distracted so easily). Unlikely to get done for the fest but may well do it anyway at some point in the future (you aced yours btw) x

I never saw this suggestion until today. I could maybe give it an 11-years-late try.
That reminds me, I had a suggestion from Hook to cover REM's Talk About The Passion which I remember starting but didn't finish before the end of the Festival. Maybe time for another SuggestFest?
