Title: The Annual Songcrafters Sampler Jukeboxes
Post by: 64Guitars on June 23, 2013, 07:33:21 PM
We've decided to call the new annual jukeboxes "Songcrafters Sampler" rather than "Best of Songcrafters".
There is no minimum post count, so all current members with one or more eligible songs can submit one.
Each member can submit only one song.
The song can be an original or a cover.
The song must be recorded and performed by you (and, optionally, other Songcrafters members) in the year of the jukebox and posted in that year as well.
MP3 files hosted offsite are acceptable, but only if your post includes a direct link to the MP3 file. For example, alonetone is fine but some of the other popular music sites don't give you a direct link to the MP3 file. Instead, they only give you a link to a web page which contains a player for the song. If in doubt, post your song info here and I'll let you know if I can use it or not.
Submissions will be accepted only till the end of this year. Beginning January 1, 2014, only submissions for Songcrafters Sampler 2013 will be accepted.
To submit your song, post a message in this topic with the year of the jukebox (2008-2012), the song title and a link to the topic containing the song. If the topic contains more than one version of the song, be sure to state which version you want. Otherwise, I'll just take the version from the first message at the top of the topic.
You can submit a song for each year that you were a member, up to and including 2012. If you posted a song in Dec 2007 (when the site began), you can submit it as your 2008 entry if you like.

Question. Can we re-record a song from a previous year or must it be the original recording?

Nice one :)
I felt vaguely uncomfortable reading the earlier plans last week, couldn't put a finger on what it was, though, and couldn't figure out any improvement... so I kept quiet :D
But this is it - it's a fab plan, nice one guys. I shall dig out my own selections later when I'm at home.

Sounds like a great idea. I was a member for the last few months of 2010 so the one from that year kinda picks itself;
2010 - I've Seen How He Looks at You https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=9367.msg126066#msg126066
Still very proud of the story telling and feel of that song.

2012 actually not so tough. Mostly I was doing covers, and I decided only to add original songs. Come to that mostly I was doing covers of songs from the Buzzcocks Spiral Scratch EP. Whatever.
Here's my 2012 selection...
2012 Don't You Wish Your Boyfriend was a Geek Like Me https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=14688.msg183913#msg183913
Which is an original, despite having a similar name to another song

Here's my choices... I had to throw a Steppin Stone song in there... It just friggin rocks!!!
Change 2012 to Wilford Brimley .... https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=14830.0
Forgot about the cover thingy... I leave the rest of the Stepping Stone Stuff up to Eric and Mark... If Eric or Mark doesn't post any Stepping Stone Stuff I would like to use this one.. .just wanted to wait on them...
I think it should be the recording that was made and posted in the year of the jukebox because the jukebox represents a sampling of songs posted in that year. But it doesn't necessarily have to have been written in that year. So, if you want to re-do one of your earlier songs, you can submit it next year for the 2013 jukebox.

OK, here we go, here's mine... apart from 2009, it was very difficult choosing them. I've ended up going with my personal favourite songs I recorded in those years, rather than my "best" recordings or, indeed, the most "successful" (most listened to) ones from those years :D.
2012 was particularly difficult to choose - it's a real shame I didn't complete Shine in 2011, (I actually started it in September that year, but then we moved house), I could've picked one of the others for 2012 then...
Anyway, 64G, I've included the alonetone mp3 urls in this post as well (they're buried in the singlemp3 tags in the threads anyway), I wasn't sure whether that was what you meant or not.
2009 - If We Should Sing Together https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=2835.msg25460#msg25460 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=2835.msg25460#msg25460) http://alonetone.com/andyr/tracks/if-we-should-sing-together.mp3

I might be able to link directly to these if you make them downloadable at ReverbNation. Most of your songs already are downloadable but not these two. They need to have the blue Download button to the right of the songs on this page:
If you make them downloadable, I can link directly to them. However, I'm not sure if the link will continue to work indefinitely. It's possible that ReverbNation might change the URL periodically to discourage direct linking. But we won't know for sure till we try it.
For example, the direct link to your song "Algo nuevo" looks like this:
That long number at the end looks suspiciously computer-generated and they might generate new numbers from time-to-time so that direct linking won't work.
But let's give it a try. It might work.

I wish that i could have separate entries for Tampaska (w/RTT), Clere Water Blues (W/bruno) & of course little old Hook, but that's very selfish of me so after some soul searching & some serious reminiscing her are my pics.
I'm absent in 2010, I was mostly recording tunes for the other me that actually works, I should probably start doing more of that! 2011- "The Black Hole" https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=13322 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=13322)

These new jukeboxes are great and its really nice to hear my songs in the context of all the other great songs posted here.
What it has brought home to me though is how crappy the mix was on some of those earlier songs. I'd like to do a better mix and replace - is that allowable? Not re-record anything, just a better mix. This is because participating on this site and sharing my songs has taught me a lot. I can tell the difference between my older stuff and recent ones.
I'm already thinking twice about what I put in, but I'm presuming that once a song is posted to the jukebox it has to stay there. Otherwise people will be routinely changing their songs, I guess.

No, we want the samplers to contain a sampling of what our members recorded and posted in a given year. We don't think a 2013 remix should be in a 2010 jukebox, for example. You could re-record the song and submit it next year for the 2013 sampler, if you like. But you'd have to re-record all the tracks because, otherwise, it would just be a 2013 remix of 2010 (or whatever) tracks. I think everything (performing, recording, mixing, and posting) should be done in the year of the sampler jukebox. The only thing that doesn't have to be done in the same year is the songwriting. You can use songs you wrote earlier as long as everything else was done in the year of the sampler jukebox.

As long as people aren't too fickle, I don't mind changing a few songs. But only till the end of the year. Come January 1, 2014, all of the jukeboxes up to and including 2012 will be frozen as they are. No changes will be made and no new submissions will be allowed. We'll start thinking about the 2013 sampler instead.

WOW this was hard,....... but hear's my songs for the sampler
2009 My friend https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=5477
It's possible, though I don't think it would be a good idea. The way it is now, nobody has more than one song in each jukebox. If I put them all in one jukebox, some people would have 5 songs (even more in the future) while others might only have 1 or 2. Also, this is meant to be an ongoing annual thing, so it makes sense to me to have one for each year. And I think it's kind of nice to look back on a specific year and reminisce about the music that was posted that year. This might be even more interesting a few years down the road, when people will be able to listen to the music that was posted the year they joined Songcrafters, for example, and reminisce.
If you meant that you'd like to have one master jukebox as well as the individual years, that would be too much work for me as I'd have to update two jukeboxes for each song. I don't want to double my workload.
I'm not sure if anyone noticed, but I added a menu to each jukebox (between the banner and the player) which contains a link for each year. So you can instantly switch from one year to another without going back to the index page. In fact, I've been thinking of doing away with the index page and just having the button at the top of the page link directly to the 2008 jukebox. Since it's so easy to switch years, I don't think there'd be much of an advantage to having all of the songs in one jukebox.

Yeah, I meant both the yearly jukes and a master juke. I'm perfectly happy with what we have and will be more happy if songs continue to be added to them.
I like the master list, but I agree completely it's not needed with a link for each jukebox on each page. I really enjoyed going back and looking at the songs I posted which I probably wouldn't have done otherwise. And it's fun listening to what others choose for themselves.

Bluesberry's reminiscing of his posts from 2013 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=19217.msg247908#msg247908) reminded me that it's time to start submitting our song choices for the Songcrafters Sampler 2013 jukebox.
Here's a reminder of the rules. Please be sure to follow them.
There is no minimum post count, so all current members with one or more eligible songs can submit one.
Each member can submit only one song.
The song can be an original or a cover.
The song must be recorded and performed by you (and, optionally, other Songcrafters members) in the year of the jukebox and posted in that year as well. Songs including non-member performances, backing tracks, etc. will not be allowed as it's meant to be a sample of music performed by our members.
MP3 files hosted offsite are acceptable, but only if your post includes a direct link to the MP3 file. For example, alonetone is fine and (I think) SoundCloud. But some of the other popular music sites don't give you a direct link to the MP3 file.
I've changed my mind on this one. I'll continue to accept submissions for 2008-2012 but only if you have not yet made a submission for those years. Submissions that have already been made for 2008-2012 will not be changed. That was my original intent when I made these rules. I think we all tend to change our minds about which of our songs we like best and I don't want to have to keep making changes to the jukeboxes. But I realize that some members might not have made their choices yet for 2008-2012 so I'll still accept those submissions.
We will probably do a CD at a later date based on the songs in the jukebox and member post counts for the year. For copyright reasons, we will only include original songs on the CD. So you might want to take that into account when selecting your song for the jukebox and choose an original rather than a cover.
To submit your song, post a message in this topic with the year of the jukebox (2008-2013), the song title and a link to the topic containing the song. If the topic contains more than one version of the song, be sure to state which version you want. Otherwise, I'll just take the version from the first message at the top of the topic.
You can submit a song for each year that you were a member, up to and including 2013. If you posted a song in Dec 2007 (when the site began), you can submit it as your 2008 entry if you like.
A few people submitted a song for 2013 last year even tough the year was not over and there was no 2013 Sampler jukebox. Since I don't know if you still want the same song (you might have posted something else since then that you prefer), please post your 2013 choice again, even if you still want to choose the same song.

Slow year for me, I only had three songs to choose from, I really need to get some more going this year......
My favourite from 2014 was Transcendence, everything just clicked out on this one, I was in the zone.

2015 was quite a year, bad start being hospitalized, and taking the best part of the year to recover (getting there properly now). Managed to travel 4000 miles and get to Florida. Met up with my bro. Hook and his family, and met Blooby and Lurker. Super fellows, and great musicians all. Respect! We all played a gig, and then recorded a tune in the car park on a warm summer evening in Tampa - my favourite musical moment probably ever :-) - pure songcrafter's magic.
Been an active year for me songcrafters for. Have posted 37 (I think!) recordings, plus all of the recordings from the MET, plus a few collabs. Busy, busy, busy!
To pick one is difficult - I'll think I'll go for Drablow, as I don't write lyrics very often, and was really pleased with these (I surprised myself).

My only song posted from 2015...........a bit weird......My new Years resolution is to get off my ass and play more guitar and write/record/post more songs this year.......gotta have goals......
Thanks for the reminder. I hadn't thought about it.
Everyone can start posting their choices here and I'll add them to the jukebox.

Here's mine. I did this song with mike Huntinford https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=23666.msg289328#msg289328 It means a lot to me as I had just got out from hospital after various heart surgery procedures And the words just spilled out. If I remember correctly the words hit Bruno as well so there was a real honest no holds barred statement of my life up to then. Mikes music just done something to my head.

Wrong year Kenny. That was posted in 2015. We're doing the 2016 sampler now.
I suppose I could add it to the 2015 sampler jukebox since neither you nor Mike submitted an entry for that year. But please choose a song posted in 2016 for the 2016 Sampler jukebox.

Bon choix Alfredo! I went back to your topic of that song... and I realized I didn't thank you. for that:
QuoteIf instead, as in "Are You Goung with Me?", the tune is more than 8 minutes long, you need someway a compromise, to remain inside the Songcrafters' upload limits. This means that you will save the mp3 file with a LOWER kbps resolution. Try 112, save, check out the mp3 dimension, if you are "inside" problem solved, if NOT, go down at 96. Of course, higher the kbps resolution, better audio quality... I hope it make sense... ::)
it was perfectly clear and I do that now when the songs are too long.

It's nice to see that the number of song submissions has picked up a bit since 2019. Hopefully, we'll get a few more. It would be nice if we could get it up to 20 songs or more for 2020. And if you've not yet submitted a song for 2019 or any previous year, you can still do so.

Just post the links to the topics. I'll know what year to put it in by the date of the topic.
Remember, you can only submit one song for each year and it must be recorded and performed by you (and other members of Songcrafters if it's a collaboration) in the year it was posted.
By the way, you can quickly find the topic for the song that's currently selected in your jukebox by clicking the "Comment" button.

I like to post original songs to the sampler jukebox. When I looked at my output from last year, there's a ton of covers but only three originals, and two of those are instrumentals. In my head to be a "song" there should be music and singing.
Which leaves me with This is not a Disco (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=34346), which is fine cause I really like that one. Just as well.
I noticed it... that is why I didn't comment on it...but i thought there might be a overlap or something. Thanks for being such a great admin on this very special site 64! I can't wait to hear what KM does put up.
Just realised that this song was posted January 14, 2024 so it doesn't qualify for the 2023 Sampler. Please choose a song that you posted in 2023.
Sorry for not noticing the date problem sooner.

Just noticed we haven't done our 2024 Sampler (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?action=festival;sa=Sampler;yr=2024) yet. 😲
Post a link to your choice for 2024 in this topic. See the rules here (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?msg=231596).

This is mine https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?msg=416309
I recorded about 85 songs last year and some really great colabs...and I want to thank all those who I colab with last year... they were all great...
and I almost picked one of those...
but I went with this cover...
Lucky White's dad was a pretty famous musician and I really fell in love with this song that Lucky, his son wrote and recorded although my version is quite different than his.
but I chose this as I feel it represents the most about me in what i am doing musically, except one (songwriting). I put a lot of time into this and I really like the results of the production. I felt like I got to a great place with all the instruments and vocals and then was able to capture it well... I really like the production parts alot and overall that is why I picked this song.
is it my favorite I did? probably not, not even sure there is such a thing as honestly musically I am all over the place so it is like many artists vying to be heard... isn't home recording great?
pooooey on those who speak down on us!!!!

I have been honoured to do some great collaborations this year so quite difficult to chose. I've plumped for this one with Trevor.

I had to choose between my collaboration with Jean Pierre on " Lady Jane" and " I'm so tired" from the Beatles. It became the last one. JP found an Abbey road studio sound effect for my vocals. It sounded super. https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=34786.0

For 2024, I'll say this one partially because I started it in January of that year and didn't follow up in completing it until almost the end of the year ;D. Plus I love sound of the guitars I was able to get with darn Mesa (which got sold long ago :'()

well, I know you got some awesome family stuff going on... I do hope you are playing some at least...I can't imagine you without a guitar in your hands and some (ok, lots of) pedals at your feet...
I had a dream and in that dream you were getting married and while you were walking down the isle toward your love (it was a guitar) there was a wee las and she was spreading pedals all over the walk way as you walked and when you got to the altar all the pedals lit up and the guitar began to play through the various ones... and each time you so much as twitched the pedal configurations would change... and it was the most inspirational guitar music ever heard...
now there is a video idea for someone.

I think I will have Hammerhead Shark for my choice. It's a song that never would have existed without the Creature fest.

Can't keep my inner voice quiet while meditating (part 1) (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=35387)
I was mostly MIA for '24.
I did not sing on any of my originals, but decided to pick this anyway. I'm really happy with my guitar tone and also my playing on this. It's not flashy in any way, just a testimony that sometimes age is not a bad thing. ;D
