I've been resisting i-thingies for stubbornness, but after listening some of the stuff you guys are doing, I am seriously considering buying an ipad.
Lets just stick to music and ignore all the ipad functionalities. My many questions (and BB's, I guess):
1. Garageband - is it as good as it seems? I've noticed there are no bass amps? WTF? Is it easy to export the wavs so I can do final mixing in a daw?
2. GB / smart guitar (or whatever it is called) - It is so tempting to press a button and have the difficult chords you struggle for 20 years! Is it as fun as it seems or does it leaves you with a sense of emptiness?
3. How do you record voice with GB? Assuming you have the right connectors, can you actually record a bass/ a synth/ whatever?
4. All those magic ipad apps - synths, synths and synths... can you "reroute" (?) them to record with garageband?
5. Again... Garageband - is it as good as it seems?!? There must be a catch... Are there any daw that allow more sophisticated mixing and mastering (errr... using wndows vst?!?).
Cheers,
Miguel
Yes Miguel, I too have many questions......but I am also intrigued as heck about the possibilities..............

Yes! It is as good ... and simple. No bass amp, but I don't think I'd use the guitar amps either .... well ... I will give them a try if/when I get an iRig.
You can export to m4p and import that in a daw. I did that on "Asylum pit" (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=17445.msg216924#msg216924)(well I imported it in Audacity, converted to wave and put it on my BR800 before adding vocals)
Quote2. GB / smart guitar (or whatever it is called) - It is so tempting to press a button and have the difficult chords you struggle for 20 years! Is it as fun as it seems or does it leaves you with a sense of emptiness?
I find playing with the instruments I'm not familiar to most satisfying. Cello, doublebass, violin, drums .......
Quote3. How do you record voice with GB? Assuming you have the right connectors, can you actually record a bass/ a synth/ whatever?
Yes .. and yes ... I have recorded vocals with the built in mic (on "A New year" (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=17291.0)). If you have an iRig you can plug in a guitar/bass or even a synth. The synth sounds on the iPad are however fab if you get the right apps.I guess I could have recorded my latest song in garageband, but due to old habits I just plugged the ipad into the line in on my br80 and recorded it there. The mastering effects on the BR's are fab, and I haven't got any apps that covers that yet.
Quote4. All those magic ipad apps - synths, synths and synths... can you "reroute" (?) them to record with garageband?
I think you can. I just downloaded "Tabletop" which seems to do that, tho I haven't figured it out yet.
Quote5. Again... Garageband - is it as good as it seems?!? There must be a catch... Are there any daw that allow more sophisticated mixing and mastering (errr... using wndows vst?!?).
The catch is that there are only 8 tracks !!! There are other options I think, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
Hope this answers some questions. I sure don't regret getting the iPad. I mean, 10$ for a minimoog !!!!! And thumbJamb ....wow !! So much good noise for so little money once you've invested in the hardware !

Miguel

I believe you can export directly to WAV from GarageBand. Somebody asked about that before and I posted some instructions I found online. I'll try to find it and post the link here.
Found it: https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=16069.msg200975#msg200975 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=16069.msg200975#msg200975)
Actually, it exports to AIFF, not WAV. But the BRs and the BR Wave Converter can work directly with AIFF files just as easily as they do with WAV files.
The only thing I have to record music is GarageBand on the iPad, it's a great tool with fantastic sounds, I use an iRig to plug my guitar into it and now have a line 6 keyboard to make playing the virtual instruments a bit easier.
The bass options are pretty basic, enough to get by with but that's about it. I also wish there were more drum options too, not enough cymbals and there is no percussion like chimes etc
I bought an iRig mic but it's not that great I get a lot of hiss off it which is bad on quiet pieces of music, the built in mic is better I think, less hiss at least, the options for audio recorder is also limited as well.
QuoteThe catch is that there are only 8 tracks !!! There are other options I think, but I haven't gotten that far yet.
This is true, but you can merge tracks now, it will make a copy of the original song, so you can always revert back if you don't like the results of the merge, I've done this with several tracks and I think you lose some quality during the process but it's handy to free up tracks.
I think you would have a lot of fun with the app on iPad but dont expect too much from it would be my advice.
Dave
There are two iPads and four iPods in my home. I'm too spoiled from using DAWs to use an i-device for anything
more than some percussion and special effects sounds. Too limited for anything else, in my opinion.
The world's most expensive MP3 players.
Without a doubt...to ipad!
Hola Miguel
in brief: since you are planning to use an iPad for music, may I suggest something else than GarageBand? OK, it's a good and simple sw, but anyway it's a stripped down version regard the original GB.
Backwards: :D
Question 5: The best today for recording is Auria: http://auriaapp.com/Products/auria
absolutely great.
Question 4: yes, you can reroute almost everything: MIDI can be rerouted via CoreMIDI, and audio, effects and so on can be rerouted via the new "gold standard" called Audiobus: http://audiobus.tumblr.com/
Question 3: the best microphone for iPad is Apogee Mic; the best way to connect a guitar is the Apogee Jam (if you have a Mac they are perfect for Mac too). Of course if your double bass has a mic, you can record it with Apogee Jam with an absolutely PERFECT result (I mean no noise, no distortion etc.)
Question 2: no answer at all.
Question 1: see answers by Geir and Sessantaquattrochitarre. But there are great sw for bass too different from GB...I have not the iPad at hand now, but I could be more precise later...
Ciao

This app carries quite a hefty price tag for the full version compared to the £2.99 I paid for GarageBand. I wouldn't mind getting something better than GarageBand for my iPad, the app looks good but also quite complex to use, how user friendly is Auria?

IMO it's very user-friendly. They are also very responsive to every suggestion from the users (their forum is very "crowded"). And...I too had an iRig, Dave. After I bought an Apogee Jam, never used it anymore. Different worlds.

Auria looks pretty good. $50 seems a lot for an iOS app, but it's a bargain for a 48-track recorder. I mean, compared to the price of a BR or Zoom, $50 isn't much.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=von4Amy7P6UHere's a review of Auria (begins at 9:10).
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q63No6h8AycAuria is strictly an audio recorder. It doesn't do MIDI at all.
Another app that looks good is Cubasis. It's also $50 but it has unlimited audio
and MIDI tracks. Its perhaps not as pretty as Auria, but it seems to do more. Certainly, being able to record MIDI tracks along with your audio tracks is a big plus. And if you already use Cubase on your PC, then Cubasis seems like the logical choice for your iPad. And Steinberg has been making DAWs for a long time, whereas Auria is the first DAW that WaveMachine Labs has ever made. I think Steinberg's experience making DAWs and the MIDI capabilities of Cubasis make it the better choice. But I have to admit that Auria's screens are very visually appealing.
http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/ios_apps/cubasis.html (http://www.steinberg.net/en/products/ios_apps/cubasis.html)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NxwNkhCVnlgI got the impression from the Sonic State reviews that both Auria and Cubasis have some limitations and really don't give you the same sort of experience you'd get in a good PC DAW like Cubase, SONAR, or even REAPER. So if your main reason for buying an iPad is to use it as a multitrack recorder, I think you might be better off investing in a good DAW for your PC instead. On the other hand, if you wanted an iPad mainly for all the awesome music apps that are available for it (AniMoog, ThumbJam, etc.), then I think something like Cubasis would be good to have as well.
64chitarre, many reviews about Cubasis x iPad say that there are still several problems to solve...

Yes, I got that impression from the Sonic State reviews of both products. As they said, these are both initial releases and they're bound to get better as updates are released. But, in the meantime, I'm sure they're both usable, although it might be a bit frustrating dealing with all the problems.
Cubase sounds tempting, but I think I'll have to wait until I've got the grips on all my other new toys ;D
Damn! I was hoping you guys to say "no! ipad is all "fancy clothes and no knickers"" or something like that, but now you got me into troubles with my She-Chief Financial Officer...
I wonder what is the best strategy... "dear! I'm getting an Ipad for making music" or "dear! I'm getting an Ipad, just because it looks so nice to have one".... hmmm - 2nd...
Now more seriously:
64G, I got the BR800 and the BR80 and I was extremely disappointed, especially with the BR80. My 2 last songs were made with Reaper and EnergyXT, which I bought the full version. EnergyXT is very small, it is portable (my digital life is a mess with too many computers around) and it runs on Linux (even though, apparently some VSTs don't run at all). My geek project is to get a persistent linux in a pen disk with my music apps, and happily move from computer to computer. But for that, I would need to be proficient with Linux, which I am not. And I need a short term solution.
Another aspect, there is the dss ak (ante-kids) and the dss pk (post-kids). I only have time for myself when they are sleeping, and when that happens, either I am not at home, or I am but I can't make any noise. The ipad seems interesting for the freedom and lightness it inspires. It is easy to move around.
I don't know when, but I am pretty much decided to buy one. And this means this is the end of the line for the BRs & friends. I seriously think the Ipad killed the multitrack recorder.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W8r-tXRLazsThank you all for the comments, and I hope we soon start more threads with ipad apps.
There are two iPads in my home (Mrs Demon owns them) and I just cannot bring myself to view them as anything more than a very expensive toy.
Not even a mini USB port. Can't employ VST or VSTi plugins. Can't install my DAW software on it.
Limited memory and storage space, which is non-expandable. No multitasking capability.
For what an iPad costs, $600 or more, might as well buy a computer. Much more capability.
I've already filled up nearly a terabyte of drive space on finished music and work in progress.
I have six terabytes of drive space on my home network, so no worries there.
The cloud belongs in the sky.
Can't bring myself to keep my data on a remote server that may not even be in the country I live in.
I never had a problem backing up my data and I do not trust total strangers who want me to pay them to
keep my data safe. Its already safe in my home.
iPads are nice movie and music players. They are too big to carry around on a daily basis.
I prefer carrying an iPod Touch. Fits nicely in a pocket.
My two cents worth.
I can't answer any of your questions because I've never done any serious recordings on GB on my iPad. You've gotten tons of good advice anyhow! lol
I like to use it to work out parts of my songs, or to work out bass and drums. My man cave is pretty small and I have to put everything away when I'm not using it. It's much easier to whip out my iPad than it is to set everything up. It's also great fun to set up a groove on GB and improvise guitar over it.
Interesting. I gave a thought to the ipod. My daily mobile is an android which is OK for all the things phones now do. It is quite poor in terms of music apps (though there are some interesting apps like chordbot or SynprezFM) but they are quite limited in terms of making music standalone. I am not really interested on the iphone (which besides I find absurdly expensive!). The ipod seemed an interesting alternative, but I noticed many of the music apps from apple store are not compatible with the ipod. I am afraid of investing money on an hardware that seems to be forgotten by app developers...
