Title: Country lyrics generator
Post by: 64Guitars on October 19, 2012, 02:40:50 PM
This has been around for decades, so some of you have probably seen it before. I think it originated at MAD magazine, then someone made it into a program. Various versions have been floating around ever since.

[country_lyrics]

Every time you reload this page, you'll get a different lyric. Try it!

Here's how it works. It's based on the following template:

I met her string_1 string_2
I can still recall string_3 she wore
She was string_4 string_5
and I knew string_6

string_7 I'd string_8 forever
She said to me string_9
But who'd have thought she'd string_10 string_11
string_12 goodbye.

For each of string_1, string_2, string_3, etc., there is a list of possible text strings.

For example, the strings for string_1 are:

      "on the highway"
      "in Sheboygan"
      "outside Fresno"
      "at a truck stop"
      "on probation"
      "in a jail cell"
      "in a nightmare"
      "incognito"
      "in the Stone Age"
      "in a treehouse"
      "in a gay bar"
and the strings for string_2 are:

      "in September"
      "at McDonald's"
      "ridin' shotgun"
      "wrestlin' gators"
      "all hunched over"
      "poppin' uppers"
      "sort of pregnant"
      "with joggers"
      "stoned on oatmeal"
      "with Merv Griffin"
      "dead all over"

The computer then generates a random number to select one text string from each list. For example, if the first two random numbers were 3 and 0 then the first line of the song would be:

I met her at a truck stop in September

If anyone has any ideas for additional strings, post them here. Or maybe you have some ideas for new templates to create more verses?

Nice job, Mach. I'm not a country fan myself, but when I read the random lyrics from this program, I imagine them sung to the tune of "Okie from Muskogee".

Wow this is brilliant 64G.

Cool program, if I'd seen this earlier I'd used this for the country part on "Dissolved" ;D
