Title: Dancing in the Dark (Bruce Springsteen)
Post by: Hilary on August 28, 2012, 04:52:17 PM
OK so I did a version of Dancing in the Dark and it was very stripped back just guitar and vox and I thought it might need livening up or maybe that was the point of it being stripped back. I'm a bit er limited as to what to do to liven it up as I can't play any instruments so I thought I'd give some harmonies a go on the basis that I can always delete them. Well they were quite hard to do and it was all a bit scratchy which normally means it's a bad idea! Anyway, here's the version on internal mics and there's a lot of clicking in and out on the BR I should really take out at some point.

Thanks guys - I got the original idea from Amy Macdonald - I'm a big fan and she's been a huge inspiration to me starting out as she couldn't play the guitar when she first started either and a lot of her early songs are 4 chord repeats (so I used to perform a lot of them - although some aren't suitable because of the er age difference). She's also got a lot of really good 'how to play my songs on the guitar' videos on Youtube for novices like myself. My first song I learnt when I branched out on my own in May 2011 was Poison Prince and it's still very special to me. Hopefully I can play it a bit better now!

Haylie you laid those delicate harmonies in there perfectly to fill things out.  Nice mix of call and response and straight harmony. Your vox can definitely carry a song - no big instrumentation needed at all.  Sounds lovely just as it is.  Well done!  DD

Not sure I've ever heard a stripped down version of this song before but it works really well!

Your voice reminds me of Tracey Ullman,........................have already covered one of hers?

Oh thanks DD and Burthog - DD I didn't want to do a straight up 3rd harmony (probably why it was so tricky) wanted something a bit different.

Burthog - I don't actually really do covers anymore - but if I ever get the urge I'll check some of hers out (I haven't done any previously) - is she still singing?

Thanks for listening and commenting guys x

this would be fab to cover, although the chords look a bit challenging for me  ???

(I love the way she put's humour in her vids, but then she would she's a comedian. I think her singing was a lot more popular in the States than the UK.)

I think I prefer this tune, originally written by Kirsty MacColl I think.

Very nicely done, Haylie.

This is the only unplugged version I've ever heard, and it is quite enjoyable.

Your voice is pure gold.
