Title: "Like A Fool" Hook covers Geir
Post by: Hook on May 20, 2012, 11:36:56 PM
TributeFest II (banner image missing)

The 1st voice I heard on songcrafters was Geir's and I was instantly a fan. His musicianship is amazing, his songwriting skills are 2nd to none & his voice just blew me away. I'm pretty sure I haven't heard a song from him I didn't like and I've been thinking about covering this tune for months now. You can find the original here  https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=12161 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=12161) and the brilliant Facemask did an incredible cover of it here https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=13012 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=13012)
I wanted to make this my own so I opted to produce it up, I sped up the tempo a bit (hope that doesn't upset anyone too much) and tracked it out. The percussion is six tracks, all actual instruments, and I've been neglecting my mandolin so I pulled it out for this one.
Geir, I toiled over covering any of your tunes(not that I can play many of them), afraid I would screw it up but oh well; it's too late now! All done on the br, percussion tracks through the ps-02 mic into br.
1 chorus uke
1 clean uke
1 bass
1 stereo lead vocal
1 harmony vocal
2 mandolin
1 triple bongo
1 shaker egg
1 tambourine
1 vibra slap
1 wooden guiro
1 finger cymbal
"Like A Fool"
written by Geir
preformed by Hook

What have we here............I have to stop everything I am doing and give this one a spin....I like the smokefilled barroom jazzy feel, it reminds me a little of what Tom Waites may have done with this one, not the vocal, just more of the very cool arrangement...............and that mandolin is just ..... just .......just .......... yeahhmm you know it, thats what I like, yes sir.  One of my favorites, covering one of my favorites, a true Songcrafters moment.  God I love this place.

Cool cover of a fabulous song.

Quote from: Hook on May 20, 2012, 11:36:56 PMHere's a double fester for you.

Actually, double festers aren't possible this time around. TributeFest is covers of songs written by other members and covers aren't allowed in DIY Fest since you have to do it yourself, including the songwriting.

https://songcrafters.org/community/index.php?topic=15129.0 (https://songcrafters.org/forum/index.php?topic=15129.0)

Maybe we'll have a DIY Covers Fest sometime in the future but this time it's strictly originals.

What better way to start a week than getting with a truly talented musician covering one of your songs !!!

I'm totally blown away by this. I just had time to put it on my piPhone before heading to work and have listened to it at least 20 times now ;D And with every listen I hear new and exciting details. The music's so skillfully performed, tight, but so playfully relaxed that only a very confident musician can manage.

The up-tempo arrangement works brilliantly and the vocals are just superb.

Thank you for making my day Hook !!!

Oh ...............and that mandolin is just ..... just .......just .......... :D :D :D the icing of the cake ! ;D

I couldn't have put it better myself. I was thinking the same as I drove to work today.

You said it Dave !!!

Dave- Thanks brother, you rock the best comments!
64- I knew that, I remember The Reverends post but I might have been a bit impaired by the time of posting, sorry!
Gier- Glad you like it brother, thanks for a great song!

I think these tributes are the most intimidating covers to attempt. I've usually played most of the covers I've recorded for years, having time to get comfortable with it & make it my own.  Having a more personal relationship, as virtual as it is, with said songcrafters vs. say...Elvis Costello puts the pressure on in a much different way, but I have enjoyed recording these tributes much more than I do my typical coverfest entries. I have one more in mind but I won't get to it until next month, got a little family vacation coming up end of this week!
 Thanks for listening!

Absolutely fabulous!

Just blew me away!

And in keeping with Geirs approach to making music. Imaginitve use of instrumentation, but maybe not bottletops crushed and nailed to a stick. Still, right up there with the best!

I have to put this on my piepod.

Damn, this sure is sweet!

I stand in awe of all the talent and work that went into covering it. Percussion and mandolin completely rock the house...hell, every bit of it is of high caliber!

Love all the acoustic instruments, especially the percussion, not to mention the mandolin.

Really Good

Indeed I am ;D ;D

I still find small details I didn't hear the first 20 times I listened :)

And one thing I forgot to mention in my last comment : That bass ! Wow just perfect !!!
And all the time you must have used on just the rhythm tracks ! You really are a fabulous percussionist !

In a dream I see you, Rob and me performing this with a load of our songcrafter friends joining us !

Way cool creative set of instruments and love the sound you got out of em.  I went back and listened to
the G man original, great song dude.  Taking this fine tune and making something of your own out of it
is a tribute indeed!  Congrats to both of you.
