there is a long story behind this collaboration,
hoop (ken) sent me a rough mix about a week ago but with quite precise instructions re when and where to sing, ie 1st verse at point a, chorus at point b etc.
he the said he wanted the song called lolita and should be about a scotsman falling for a dark eyed dark haired senorita.
i rattled off a vox in the style of chris rea, but i had issues about the title being lolita and its sexual connotations, so song then became roseitta, juanitta and various other names , however whenever i tried singing another name i kept fluffing it at the 2nd chorus and would automatically sing lolita.
anyway we reverted back to lolita cos it sounded right and sounded best, after a few tries of singing in various styles all with a midatlantic accent, ken sent me a mix with his fave take of my vocals but upped the production and added some frankly awesome backing vocals.
however i still wasnt happy, kept getting the pronunciation of diablo wrong kept coming out as diablio. so i decided on another take before both of us got completely fed up with the song altogether.
so true to kens original request i sang in my native accent. so here is the final mix of lolita. for now.
You boys! you can't fool me! you're in a huge studio with a whole bunch of session musicians ain'tcha?
Fantastic. ken, your music is so good. Jim, words and melody and delivery are brilliant.
You guys should be selling these.
Fantastic work. Everything is perfectly placed, played and produced. And ORH does his stuff like only ORH can. Really masterful :)
i wish there was a bowing smily on here. you are definately the master of the br. I am envious. Awesome song.
Thanks for the comments, guys. It's always fun on these projects, after I finally get some chords and instrument parts worked out (and this is about the point where I usually begin to get stuck with songwriting) to send it off to Oldrottenhead and then see what comes back. It's always a complete surprise (as compared to what I was kind-of imagining) and yet (so far) Jim's words and singing just fit right in and make it a real song. I really appreciate that a place has been provided on this forum for this kind of activity. :)
This song was mostly tracked on (or through) the Micro-Br and then tracks were compiled and mixed in Sonar (12 tracks). All guitars, bass and vocals were tracked through the BR. Piano (soft synth) and SR-16 drum machine were tracked directly into Sonar. After mixing, mastering was done on the M-BR.
