Title: Favourite Drummers
Post by: Gritter on February 22, 2011, 03:37:40 PM
Okay we had bassists and guitarists but how about drummers?

I purposely titled this thread "favourite" instead of "best" as I'm sure we all have different tastes.

Here's my top 10 11:

Ringo Starr - Beatles
(http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_TYvlC8IxUPM/TUXswqvDBEI/AAAAAAAAG6w/Sxqw1N1NGkQ/s1600/RingoStarrautograph.jpg)

John Wright - nomeansno
(http://dropd.com/issue/87/NoMeansNo/john.jpg)

Topper Headon - The Clash

Glenn Kotche - Wilco

Max Roach - Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, etc.

Levon Helm - The Band

Easy for me - Jaki Leibezeit of Can. A virtuoso that used his skill to create the most amazing hypnotic rhythm patterns that anchored an amazing band. Guy Evans of VdGG is pretty awesome if you are looking for technical skills.

Cheers,

I've played with some real drummers who can't seem to manage this bit :D

Anyway, I'd like to add my voice to the Barrymore Barlow club...

I like the bloke in Ocean Colour Scene as well. I remember seeing a Paul Weller gig on the telly with the original OCS band as a backing group - stunning rhythm section.

And then also the usual suspects for an old rocker like me: Ian Paice, Mr Bonham, etc...

He's fast but completely void of groove and feel...he's a soloist - a drum wanker. I wouldn't want to jam with him. I think he should add a few more drums to his kit. Yes, that would impress me!  ;)

I just want to bring an other point of view on drumming and drummers...
The drummer is Matt Johnson. He used to played with Jeff Buckley, and on this live session with Angus and Julia Stone, he plays... on his laps...
and it is perfect. A sober but fine drumming...

I'm not sure if he's the luckiest man or maybe one of the unluckiest men in the world...  ???

Either way, I wouldn't mind have some of that luck!   :)  ;D  :D

My new fav drummer... Hanna Ford... Not just another pretty face. One of the few I've seen play with emotion as well as technique and skill. The pretty face doesn't hurt for sure. This young lady has a really bright future.
