OMG, he's sharper looking than Tony Levin, and about a century older!
Love... Leland skar pic 64 G

It's a bass player's job to stay cool.
Paul Simonon then:

and now:

I would also have to vote for John Entwistle.
Not best, but somewhat underrated. Bill Wyman is like a good referee or umpire; if they are doing their job properly, you don't even know they are there.

I don't think anybody mentioned Jeff Berlin.
Thumbs up to Lemmy!! More like a rhythm guitarist with Motorhead than a "traditional" bass player though, which is what makes him interesting.
I'll add Holger Czukay, a great influence on me. And what a great innovator as well.
Cheers,
Nigel
In no particular order...
Dennis Dunaway (Alice Cooper)
Norman Watt Roy (The Blockheads)
Dave Pegg (Jethro Tull)
Geezer Butler (Black Sabbath)
Larry Taylor (Tom Waits)
Jean-Jacque Burnel (The Stanglers)
James Jamerson (Tamala Motown session bassist - played on virtually all Motown hits)
Cliff Burton (Metallica)
Paul McCartney (The Beatles)
Flea (Red Hot Chili Peppers)

Norman Watt Roy, several thumbs up. And the rest of the Blockheads as well, great band.

i'll third that

James Jamerson (Tamala Motown session bassist - played on virtually all Motown hits)
Good God, I can't believe nobody mentioned Jamerson until now.
Jamerson is noted for expanding the role of the bass in popular music, which until that time largely consisted of root notes, fifths and simple repetitive patterns. By contrast, many of Jamerson's bass lines for Motown were more melodic, more syncopated, and more improvisational than had been heard before. His bass playing was considered an integral part of the "Motown Sound". He transcended the standard "bass line" and created a duet with the singer. Prominent bassists who have claimed Jamerson as a primary influence include James Brown's Bernard Odum, Anthony Jackson, Jack Bruce, John Entwistle, Bernard Edwards, Jason Newsted, Jaco Pastorius, John Patitucci, John Paul Jones, Billy Sheehan, Geddy Lee, Victor Wooten, Paul McCartney, Mike Mills and henwrench.

Larry Taylor is the man.
Actually a guy named Sting is not bad considering the lead vocals he does while playing bass!

Now you are trying to stir things up aren't you
I don't care about slappers and tappers (no pun intendend)! Fav bassist is Kim Deal. If it wasn't her, I would never picked the bass and wouldn't be here.

And by the way, a kind word to all the anonymous studio bassists that really surprise us from time to time.
QuoteNow you are trying to stir things up aren't you
Me? never!
Bassists so good that they don't have to show off their talent in public:
Jemaine Clement (Flight Of The Conchords)
Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads)
Ray Manzarek's left hand (The Doors)
Adam Yauch (Beastie Boys)
Andy Metcalfe (Egyptians)
and of course Kim Deal rocks!
Not.....WaHahahaha
Quote from: Gritter on February 09, 2011, 09:44:07 AMRay Manzarek's left hand (The Doors)
Hahaha, I hear he had an unusually large thumb on his left hand, freakishly large.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WGVgfjnLqcThat's my favourite kind of bass playing. It doesn't just sit on the root note. It gets up and dances around.

There ya go, the best people with the best taste....
And for all you geeks out there, god know's I'm one, 'Hit Me With Your Rythym Stick' contains the most bass notes in one song. So there.... And the man was a midget. Norman Watt Roy, not 64 Guitars.....

This man doesn`t get enough credit..Freakin awesome bass lines!!

Yea, but he's a West Ham United fan and he thinks his bass is a machine gun. I like to think of my bass as a pissing woman..... who is a midget.... and likes skinned rabbit flesh....

Very cool, the Tina Weymouth and Kim Deal nods!
Doesn't seem like anybody mentioned Tom Hamilton (Aerosmith). "Walk This Way" on a nice stereo is quite refreshing.
Great thread this.
Another perspective on the best bassist in the world:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_2uFCW_z1cCheck 1:40 forwards and open your ears at 2:10 (in fact, it is quite audible ;-))
This is great
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RDgkbLw4qkwHas anybody mentioned Andy Fraser of Free
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_FhCilozomoThis is an awesome performance , and to think they were only together for 4 years
Rocco Prestia from Tower of Power I don't think has been mentioned. He definitely had his own thing.
Just read all through this and was thinking "there's someone else, there's someone else..."
Yep, facemask got him, Andy Frazer - the stuff he did in Free was amazing, right up there with the guitar playing from Paul Kossoff.
My fave "name" bass players at the moment are Geddy Lee and Paul McCartney, though. I've always loved what Mr McCartney did in the middle-period Beatles albums. Mr Lee is a more recent hero of mine, and not just for his bass-playing, he's an all-round music machine...
Shame! We forgot to mention:
John Deacon (Queen)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BAf2S6ij2gk(please note Conan The Cimmerian on vocals)EDIT:posted today for no particular reason (29/04/2011)
Mike Mills (REM)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gD3cYh5Pp1I(couldn't find Driver8)Andy Rourke (Smiths)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5PHQ5QdNj9UAnd last but certainly not least, Mark Sandman (morphine)

Good grief, yes, John Deacon. Excellent bass-player.
I can't be bothered to go back and check, have we mentioned Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash? If not, er... Martin Turner of Wishbone Ash

'Bout damn time someone brought him up!!! You don't even have to like metal to see not only the skills, but also the musical genius of Steve.
