Quote from: guitarron on September 25, 2008, 05:07:31 AMi bought a Variax 300 online-(only guitar i ever bought sight unseen) for $299 when they were blowing them out about a year ago
The 300 has the same guts as the more expensive models but had a chincy neck.
After much futzing with it, it plays decent and honestly some of the emulations are really very good. I especially like the gibson super 400 and es 335 because i didn't want to buy a $3000 plus guitar-
it's not my go to guitar for sure-but for the price there a lot of useful tones in it.

Funny, I liked the same two models you mentioned, but I already had an ES335...  The Gretsch Nashville model was pretty cool and the sitar would work in a pinch.

I wasn't into doing all the work necessary to get it to play decent, but the one I played was going for more than $299...  Still a great tool in the toolbox.

After finally figuring out this Micro BR and having a blast at it, recording a first song (posted yesterday on this site for anyone interested in hearing it) I now need to get a cheap Bass guitar to lay down bass tracks, and suggestions on what I should get?

Alternate Tunings: CAUTION: your fingers have to be in different places

Squier and Westfield do perfectly usable Bass guitars for guitarists looking to add a little bottom end. Anything that is a copy or approximation of a Fender Precision Bass will see you right (although there will be some proper bass players on here who won't agree...!).

Your other alternative is to post some songs in the collaboration thread and get some of the other talented people on here to add some bass for you.

I've had a bass since December, and it's great fun. I'm still learning, but have added some passable bass lines to a few songs (...once I switched my head out of regular guitar mode).

You didn't really define cheap, but here goes a few possibilities:

(1) Epiphone Viola VS - $329 new, $250 used

The Hofner import version is $349.  A friend did a bass shootout test with many bass guitars under $700 specifically for the Micro-BR and surprisingly, the Viola recorded the best for his style of pop music.  It has a skinny neck so it plays a bit more like a lead guitar...  ;)

(2) Yamaha RBX374 Electric Bass Guitar - $299 new
http://bass-guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Yamaha-RBX374-4String-Bass?sku=519038
Contoured double-cut alder body with 24-fret maple neck. High-output ceramic humbucking pickups with 2-band active EQ and pickup blending pot let you dial in a wide range of thick tones.  Very quiet and the on-board active EQ makes it easier to dial in for recording.

(3) Yamaha RBX375 5-String Bass Guitar - $369 new

I have also talked to a few guys that use the OLP (Tony Levin model) for some recording with good success.

BTW - in my profile pic, the bass I am playing is a Tonesmith Custom 316 bass, finished in TV Yellow.  ;D  It records really well and is versatile with a six position switch and three pickups - all the way from acoustic upright to P and J style.

The bass was used in a photo shoot with Dan Wilson of Semisonic.

I like this one-considering getting a 5 string something with strong p-ups in it.
My rick is nice but kinda wimpy sounding -w/o tweaking the crap out of it.

They might be quite cheap compared to Fenders, but they get some good reviews in the guitar mags. I used to have a Squier strat, and it was a very good guitar.

This video convinced me:

But I was just told by one us-ebay seller that he doesn't want to ship it all the way here...

It's ironic that I'm in London and I really want a Hagstrom! What's the reputation of Hagstrom in their home country (Sweden)? They look like great guitars to me...
