Quote from: SteveB on June 11, 2010, 08:30:54 AMWonder who's gonna be the first poster to include an annoying 'Wasp' sound on their next recording???   ;D

I am really pissed off with the stoopid vuvuzeal constant buzzing noise.  It makes watching the games with the sound on intolerable.  Seems like it won't be banned though: http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5hwSdHQ01HomBYMrk3T0zh-F4tywgD9GB6HB81

I do have to ask though, how can a plastic horn be part of a cultural tradition ?

I agree with you Migs.

I am trying to give this World Cup thing a chance, but those horns are definitely a turn off for viewers.  >:(

I have two questions:

1. Have football (footy, soccer, etc.) players always been called "Strikers" or is that a name conjured up by a marketing department to target the game to North American audiences??
I played "soccer" as a kid here in Canada for a few years and don't remember ever hearing any position called a "Striker"

2. I really don't mind watching the games, but can someone on this board give me a heads up to any potential "must see" matches? Something similar to a "Canadiens vs Maple Leafs" or "Yankees vs Red Sox" .

Thanks guys - I appreciate the info.
It ain't pretty being easy.

I am not an avid fan of the sport - I like every sport.  Played a bit as a kid but I become an "armchair expert" along with everyone else at World Cup time.  I'll have a crack at your questions.

Question 1:  A striker isn't a particularly new term.  You probably didn't hear it as a kid because it is a bit of a specialised role or ability.  It is a forward who has an inate ability to find himself in the right place at the right time to score goals.  They they find themselves in gaps and score lots of points.

Question 2:  The must watch games start in the next round when the different pool winners are matched against each other,  but you generally have the Brazil/Argentina/England/Germany games as must-watch affairs.  What also happens is someone like Ghana or Cameroon emerges as a bit of an underdog crowd favourite - I like these games.  Others will probably had a different view no doubt.

QuoteOnly because we were resting our two best players.  If they were on, the scoreline would have been reversed.  Oh, and paying off the ref to red-card our third best player just aint cricket.

*takes tongue out of cheek*

Hey it happens with every sport. Missed calls and bad calls are part of the game.

And about your 2 sideline players. Why were they on the sidelines? Germany`s captain isn`t playing either. You always need your captain. Do you really think the Aussies had a chance? Except for their scoring chance at the 4th minute, which they professionally could n`t convert ;) they were simply outplayed...hence the word i used...SLAUGHTERED!! ;D

The only war is on the field...Screw the rest of the nonsense wars.

Speaking of wars, I didn`t know North Korea was in the Cup?

I love the North Koreans.  They were going to take South Korea's feed of the World Cup but after the last boat bombing negotiations on price broke down and the south pulled out of the deal.
What do the Northerners do ?  Steal it and re-transmit it without paying anything to the South.

Sorry to be an ass Migs, but I must say the plastic horns are just as legit as stupid whistles and drums which are just as annoying from other countries.

You are quite right about those plastic horns! (Here in South Africa we know them as vuvuzelas). At least your torture will end after a month! We have to tolorate them 24/7 at every soccer match. But then I suppose it is like working in a bell factory............you get use to it after a while!!!!!!!! LOL!

Does anyone know why Germany play all three games at sea level when we have to play with oxygen masks on ::)

Oh yes and why have they been playing with that ball for 6 months and everyone else has only just had it????? ;D    (suspicious as adidas is a german company  eeehhhhh)
