OK, so after 9 months of struggling on and off with this track, here is the second instalment for my "concept album" based on the "King in Yellow" by Robert W. Chambers. This is the "Demoiselle D'ys" which is a romantic ghost story (and nowhere near as scary as Cassilda's Song....).

Like many songs, this has ended up somewhere quite different than where it started. And my personal influences are VERY obvious again. I didn't realise it until my wife pointed it out but this is effectively "Sister Europe" by the Psychedelic Furs meets Nursery Cryme era Genesis. It's surprising  how your influences play such a big part in what you think is original writing!

As usual, the production has several kitchen sinks in it (over 60 tracks....) and I don't know if it's gone too far and turned into a mushy dirge. So feedback gratefully received. All done on the MBR, although I am now thinking that a BR800 would make such prog fantasies easier to realise.... I had to shrink it to 128 to make it fit which won't help the quality.

The words are below, they are mainly from the book but woven into a song. There's quite an obvious narrative structure in the music which I hope echoes the story.

The Demoiselle D'Ys
(based on words by Robert W Chambers)

The Demoiselle D'Ys took my hand,
With a shimmer of love from a distant land
Like a falcon swooping on its prey,
In an instant my heart was torn away

Tonton, tontaine,
Chasseur, chassez encore
Tonton, tontaine,
Pour rabbatre des l'aurores
Tonton, tontaine,
Chasseur, chassez encore
Tonton, tontaine

The Demoiselle D'Ys spoke with a glance,
"Win me" she said, "in love there's no second chance"
The more she looked, the deeper I fell
One more hawk caught and tamed, jessed and belled

Tonton, tontaine,
Chasseur, chassez encore
Tonton, tontaine,
Pour rabbatre des l'aurores
Tonton, tontaine,
Chasseur, chassez encore
Tonton, tontaine

The Demoiselle D'Ys, pale and cold
Lay by my side as her life unfolds
She gave her soul, a gift divine
For a stranger's love, three hundred years out of time

Tonton, tontaine,
Chasseur, chassez encore
Tonton, tontaine,
Mon amour est mort
Tonton, tontaine,
Chasseur, chassez encore
Tonton, tontaine

Cheers,

Nigel

over 60 tracks? what did you do, turn into Mutt Lange or something?  ;D ;D

Diggin' it, wouldn't worry too much about the Genesis comparisons. Sounds more like Divine Comedy or Jarvis Cocker to henwrench's wrong ear holes. Gertcha!!

Nigel, congratulations, it's a WONDERFUL song, very well played and sung, and it's perfect by the producing point of view too.
Where will you arrive with something more powerful such as the BR-800?

Probably I didn't understand well, 60 tracks using a MBR?

Stop trying to kill yourself Nigel, get yourself one of those shiny new BR800's, you deserve it, you owe it to yourself, and you will love it.

On to this song.  It does not sound like mud, it is layered, it is very melodic, deep and rich, thats it it is very rich sounding, like the lyrics.  You have nailed this I think.  I read the lyrics and the sound of the music seems to mirror perfectly.  I will have to download this and give this a bunch of listens to really get a good impression.  First impression: I love what you have done here.

Alternate Tunings: CAUTION: your fingers have to be in different places
