Pixies used warehouses and Steve Albini-lots of mics- 20 plus were used and blended to get a live raw tone.  Hes also a fan of old ribbon mics-they get those old tones quite well apparently. 
Someone on a guitar site said at this years namm he overheard a guy saying he loved the old 60's recording of Hendrix.  Apparently the guy he was speaking to said that hendrix didnt use special gear at all-and that its not Hendrixs guitar, but the old recordings that he liked.

STP recorded Tiny Music in a rented home, much of it was recorded in a bathroom for its particular reverb.

Ive also heard of people recording  a guitar amp, then recording the playback.  Pink Floyd used a stadium for that effect I believe.

The old motown bassists would supposedly smear bacon grease on their strings to get a dull thuddy tone similar to an upright bass.
