So I get the idea to swap out preamp tubes in a cheapie preamp I have.   I intended to record the hiss at high gain and find the quietest tube to use with it.

The  mp3 says it all I think.

Get one with FET front end!

Smooth and quiet and pretty much bomb proof!

It is the Art Tube MP.  They go for 50-60 bucks new, so I wasnt expecting the world.

What I did was max the gain and record the hiss into the MBR, thinking that would be a good way to compare for hiss-which it had plenty of.  Perhaps thats not a valid test but it came to me last night while reading about experimenting with pre-amps.

I suspect the "tube" is all hype, id rather have a quiet preamp then a hissy tube preamp.

Some preamps don't take full advantage of the tube anyway - there are some Behringer models that have an LED under the tube to make it look like it's glowing. What the heck is up with that?

The hiss came from maxing the gain and output, though at working levels the hiss was still pretty obvious.  On that note the MBR is pretty dang quiet.
