Genesis 1973 Foxtrot tour. An awesome experience early in my gig going career.
Roxy Music 1973 For Your Pleasure tour. From Gabriel in a flower costume to Eno in a feather boa. 1973 was a very good year.
Damned, very early 1977 - first punk band I saw in the flesh, made me cut my hair and take in my flares.
Psychedelic Furs early 80s tour (probably Midnight to Midnight era). My fave band and a stunning gig.
Japan with Masami Tsuchiya on guitar, again early 80s, just before the break up IIRC.

Ones that came close:
Motorhead in 1978, original line up, punk heavy metal, awesome
Hawkwind (can't remember where or when, but that's the point)
Any of the Killing Joke gigs I have seen (there have been many)

Cheers,

Nigel

every one that I've been to is in my five favourite, except one at Lancaster Uni to see Echo and the Bunnymen. Ian McCullock was either pissed of off his mash on cake. It was appalling.

But

Joy Division Manchester Apollo '79 or '80, they were supporting the Buzzcocks. Strange that I can only remember Ian Curtis from the whole gig.

OMD, Manchester before they became cheesy, first electro gig and you could feel the music in the air. It was fantastic.

The Tourists Manchester - two of theose people later became Dave Stewart and Annie Lennox, although I don't know who they were at the time...

More recently, Martin Grech - Leeds Cockpit. Stunning music from someone so young at the time.

Goldfrapp - on more than one occasion. Wonderful wonderful sensual music.

That's five of some of them.
We are here on Earth to fart around. Don't let anybody tell you any different
- Kurt Vonnegut.

Hmmmmm.........

Alice Cooper on his comeback tour playing Wembley Arena (Early 80,s?) apart from Zodiac Mindwarp backing out as support and being replaced last minute by ..... Dr and the Medics  :o They got booed off after about 2 songs. Saw him at the Astoria too, stood a couple of yards from the guy. Awesome.

Saxon at The Naval Club in Tonypandy, mid 70,s, they kicked ass!! And a few months later I was at Sophia Gardens Cardiff for their tour promoting their first album.
Interestingly, at the Naval they stopped for a beer and chatted with the crowd. In Cardiff they did a big autograph sign. Saw them in Cardiff a few years back, Coal Exchange I think it was, and heard Biff say to a fan "I have been in this game too long to sign shit". Knob.

The Enid at Reading, early 80's before it went shit :( I was in a somewhat hallucinogenic frame of mind, wandering lonely through the crowd, and this fantastic eerie  and powerful music started to play! Had never heard them before, loved it, and still enjoy them now even though I don't do that crap no more.

Blue Oyster Cult at the Astoria. Seen them a couple of times before, but the Astoria is such a small venue it all seems more intimate, they played a blinder too. One of my top all time bands.

Ozzy at Donnington, again on a comeback after his breakdown. Came up at the back of the stage in a big bat, which opened its wings, he tottered out like a stooped old man, slouched humped over to the mike, then started to sing and the magic hit. That man knows how to hold a crowd!!!
Motorhead played the same year, and we were winding a big fan up by singing the Ace of spades lyrics to every song, and got very confused when they actualy played the Ace of spades ... that's why I don't do that shit no more......

That's the 5 that spring to mind, loads more. Don,t get to do gigs any more :( Kids ... who needs 'em :(

Worst gig ever, David Bowie, Glass Spider tour, when he decided to stop playing his previous hits. Biggest disappointment EVER!! Only time the crowd (Well, us anyway) got excited was when the band played the intro to Rebel Rebel, then they stopped and went into John I'm only dancing or sommat. Bummer :(

Justin_Case

1981 - Roy Buchanan, Ronnie Montrose w/ Gamma and Johnny Winter @ Capitol Theater, Passaic NJ.

1982 - Joe Perry Project - The Hole in the Wall, Maywood NJ - Went early to get tickets and walked in on a practice session, the band thought I was working at the club, the club workers thought I was with the band :)

1983 - Stevie Ray Vaughn - The Fountain Casio, Aberdeen NJ - Texas Flood was out but did to break big yet, Stevie was still playing small clubs.

1982 - Judas Priest with Iron Maiden opening act - Convention Hall, Asbury Park NJ - Priest had not broke big in USA - no one knew but a few who Iron Maiden was.

2009 - BucketHead - BB Kings - NYC, NY - 1st show with my 14 year old who now plays guitar with dad.  Great Father and Son day, walked NYC, went to Manny's guitar shop the last day they were open and took in a killer show.

The Enid, goodness gracious. Saw them in about 1975 or 6 at bristol Uni. Robert John Godfrey, Fand et al IIRC...... Now there's prog rock for you!

Aren't festivals cheating? That's lots of gigs in one.

Anyway, I rarely enjoyed festivals. Too big, too smelly (and that's just me...), bad sound, can't see the band. Perhaps I'm just getting too old.

Cheers,

Nigel
