Top 5 Albums of All Time

I know, I know, it's a ridiculous premise for us, who love so many different bands and styles of music, to try and narrow it down to 5.  I know our lists will change sometimes on a daily -- maybe even hourly basis.  But F  it, let's do it anyway.

Rules: No two albums by the same band (otherwise, my entire Top 5 would be Beatles).  No "Best Of" or "Greatest Hits" compilations.  Any genre, any time period.  Can be in random or true order.  No mulling it over -- this is meant to be really spontaneous for maximum honesty.  No coming back and altering lists later.

I'll start (random order for me):

  • The Beatles - Revolver
  • The Zombies - Odessey & Oracle
  • Yes - Close to the Edge
  • The Flaming Lips - The Soft Bulletin
  • Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

These things do change with the weather, but there are some clear favourites of mine...

- 'Transformer' - Lou Reed
- 'Dark Side of the Moon' - Pink Floyd
- 'Hounds of Love' - Kate Bush
- 'Revolver' - The Beatles
- 'Harvest' - Neil Young

But how can I leave out:

- 'Tin Drum' - Japan
- 'Penthouse and Pavement' - Heaven 17
- 'Ogdens Nut Gone Flake' - Small Faces

Oh! This is hard!!!!!!

Alright I'll play this crazy, impossible game:  I deliberately leave out Beatles because it will get picked to death probably (would have been Revolver and Magical Mystery Tour though).  Here is a list of 5 that I listen to constantly to this day.

  • The Band - Music From Big Pink
  • Wilco - Summerteeth
  • Derek and the Dominos - Layla
  • Genesis - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
  • Who - Quadrophenia

Alternate Tunings: CAUTION: your fingers have to be in different places

Bosko- On the strength of your recommendation I just ordered 'The Soft Bulletin' from Amazon (used 3.49 plus 2.98 ship)  If this is part of what has lead to the Stan Laurals sound, then I wanna hear more!  Never heard Flaming Lips before.......

List of 5 (good for this morning)

*  'Abby Road' - The Beatles
*  'Tommy' - The Who
*  'Blood on the Tracks' - Bob Dylan
*  'Aja' - Steely Dan
*  'American Beauty' - Grateful Dead

I'm right with you there, brother!
Thank God, I thought I had somewhat of a weak list IV being my only strong candidate. I bought that tape 3 different times and wore it out.

Hmm... In no particular order...

"Master of Puppets" - Metallica
"Passion and Warfare" - Steve Vai
"Surfing with the Alien" - Joe Satriani
"Innervisions" - Stevie Wonder
"Appetite for Destruction" - Guns N Roses

I can add so many...
Honorable mentions to:
Anything by Earth, Wind, & Fire
Everything from Metallica (pre 1991)
Old Chicago
Anything from Black Sabbath (Ozzy years)
Anything from Led Zepplin
Anything from AC/DC (pre Razor's Edge)
Anything from Ratt (Yeah, I know... my guilty pleasure lol  ;D "Out of the Cellar" was the first music I bought myself when I was a kid. *shrug*)
Anything from Skid Row and Alice in Chains (Both remind me of my time in Iraq during the Gulf War from '91-'92)
