Thoughts on genre

I like to jump in and out of genre's.
I've always struggled with this ,even with the covers band I was in.
Some musician said to me once at a gig that the band didn't know what it wanted to be .... a pop band , a rock band.
We would go  from drive from the cars to the drifters then play van halens jump.
I always thought there was song for everyone.
Made it more interesting.
