lyrics and translate
Non, ce n'était pas le radeau
De la Méduse, ce bateau
Qu'on se le dise au fond des ports
Dise au fond des ports
Il naviguait en père peinard
Sur la grand-mare des canards
Et s'appelait les Copains d'abord
Les Copains d'abord
Ses fluctuat nec mergitur
C'était pas d'la littérature
N'en déplaise aux jeteurs de sort
Aux jeteurs de sort
Son capitaine et ses matelots
N'étaient pas des enfants d'salauds
Mais des amis franco de port
Des copains d'abord
C'était pas des amis de luxe
Des petits Castor et Pollux
Des gens de Sodome et Gomorrhe
Sodome et Gomorrhe
C'était pas des amis choisis
Par Montaigne et La Boétie
Sur le ventre, ils se tapaient fort
Les copains d'abord
C'était pas des anges non plus
L'Évangile, ils l'avaient pas lu
Mais ils s'aimaient toutes voiles dehors
Toutes voiles dehors

translation
No, it wasn't the raft
Of the Medusa, that boat
Let it be said at the bottom of harbors
Dise au fond des ports
He sailed like a happy father
On the grand-mare of ducks
And was called Les Copains d'abord
Les Copains d'abord
Sed fluctuat nec mergitur
It wasn't literature
No matter how you cast your spell
To those who cast spells
His captain and his sailors
Weren't sons of bitches
But franco de port friends
Friends first
They weren't fancy friends
Little Castors and Pollux
People from Sodom and Gomorrah
Sodom and Gomorrah
They weren't chosen friends
By Montaigne and La Boétie
On their bellies, they slapped each other hard
Friends first
They weren't angels either
They hadn't read the Gospel
But they loved each other under full sail
All sails out
John, Peter, Paul and company
It was their only litany
Their Credo, their Confiteor
Friends first
At the first sign of Trafalgar
It was friendship that took the watch
It was friendship that showed them the way
Showed them the way
And when they were in distress
Their arms would call out S.O.S.
They were like semaphores
Friends first
At the rendezvous of good friends
There weren't often rabbits
When one of them was missing on board
He was dead
Yes, but never, never, never
His hole in the water never closed again
A hundred years later, you rascal
He was still missing
I've taken many a boat
But the only one that held out
That never changed tack
But tacked
Sailing like a father in peace
On the great duck pond
And called himself Les Copains d'abord
Les Copains d'abord
I've taken a lot of boats
But the only one that held out
That never changed tack
But tacked
Sailing like a father in peace
On the great duck pond
And called himself Les Copains d'abord
Les Copains d'abord

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

Really love this JP, such a timeless piece. It's like time travelling back to a beautiful more simple life. Some great playing, so natural and you sing really well here. All in all a damn good listen. Will download for future listens. Merci beaucoup :)

Thanks Mike, I'm glad that "good" French chanson finds a small echo and a small audience here.

I'm currently preparing a timeless, universal song by the great Charles Aznavour; I'm going to do two versions, one in English (Yesterday; when I was young) and the other with the lyrics in French ( Hier encore)...and here's something I'm thinking of! suggest to my friend Alfredo that he do a cover in Italian ..since there's an Italian version :D

I like this JP! A cool video of past times to go with the song. The style reminds me a bit of Paul McCartney's "When I'm 64". Your guitar playing (loved the kazoo) and vocals are very good. Thanks for posting the English lyric translation!
