A total re-working / partial re-write of a previous song.

Epiphone Casino plus lots of pedals (MXR phase 95, Danelectro billionaire tremolo, Nobels ODR-1, compressor, reverb,), Ibanez bass, vocals, plus GB drums & keys. And a little nod to The Wizard of Oz.

watch him nursing his lukewarm cup of tea
on a dreary day
this geezer hasn't cracked a smile in a month of Sundays
love escaped him like a helium balloon
that disappeared from sight
just another stood up groom at the registry office

and there must be more to life
than stumbling round these dead arcades
with eyes as grey as battleships
in the cut-out that you made
of yourself...

poor old mr rain

tv meals and true crimes on the box
to while away the day
when he's sifting through the evidence he's so forensic
love escaped him like a helium balloon
tangled in a tree
he lies down in the road just like a sleeping policeman

and there must be more to life
than stumbling round these dead arcades
with eyes as grey as battleships
in the cut-out that you made
of yourself...

poor old mr rain

high on the cliff
he let the balloon go
so weightless on the breeze
and then he flew so weightless too
just for a moment...

that is a bit me... at least some days...

I really love the Wizard of Oz stuff... that is awesomely cool...
enjoyed hearing about your pedals.  Are those used in chain?  Don't worry, no big explain is needed... I would guess you bounce multiple guitar parts together.
The flow of this song is lovely and defies the sadness of the lyrics, although the lyrics might be a bit sad they kind of show an overcoming of the problem as well...

I don't think I am qualified to evaluate your lyrics Tim, try as I might... ha!
I wasn't sure what the Casino is so I looked at them... sweet... in an alternate universe you are a star who has much fame and you drive all the studio musicians crazy because you almost never need their services however you sometimes take pity on some unknowns and hire them for drumming etc (ok I made all that up but you never know)....

lol there's no way one can stay silent with such songs around. I just root for mr. rain, think I know him too. Utterly beautiful song, it has an 80s Smiths sound and deepness, to me (that's to say COOOOOL!!!). ps the end is so touching

Excellent Greeny! I was hoping Mr. Rain would watch the balloon float away and then walk back from the cliff but alas, he did not. The Casino coupled with the MXR Phase and Danalectro Tremelo pedals adds a perfect jingle jangle to it and compliments your picking style, nice! Cool vocals and the OZ "marching of the guards" backing vocals are way cool!

Great song, Tim. Those guitars sound stellar and excellent vocals/lyrics. Always great production skills by you; I've never heard of those pedals you've used but whatever they are they sound bloody good.

I'm still living in monday so i'm able to enjoy this a fresh! The whole Greeny Monday thing is such a joy. I too enjoy seeing the pedal chain listed and it does trigger some bad thoughts inside my head. Mainly that Nobels ODR-1 drive. The Nashvilles worst kept secret (nowadays at least).

I would guess Greeny is using the Nobels pedals as "always on" pedal (at least for this song as there's a certain "bump" to the sound and a bit of grit). I might be wrong and the whole thing might be otherwise driven, but that's my guess.

I am still kicking myself for not buying a compressor (i thought i wouldn't need it, it never needed when i played live...). Turns out i would have (and even wayback then :)) as i had a GEM of a compressor pedal deal that i just let slide...

Ok i'm getting way out of topic here. It's not that i wasn't listening to the song. I've actually enjoyed it for three times already and it still hasn't overstayed its welcome. It's not only about great sounds. It's about great melodies and lyrics that take your for a ride. And this song has that in spades.

Great song!
