A giant of Hammond organ. He played with all the greats, Miles Davis, John McLaughlin...at only 51. Incredible.
I saw him here in concert in Palermo several years ago, in trio with John McLaughlin. The morning after I was going to a medical congress, and at the airport Joey was nearby. I told some of my colleagues: "Do you see that man? He is one of the best organ players in the world...". Probably I was talking too loud and probably Joey could understand Italian, due to his origin, since he looked at me and smiled at me, winking...

Oui cher Alfredo ..un Grand!

As you appreciate jazz I think you will like this video/tribute where we see and hear him in trio with Elvis Jones, drums (died in 2004) and Birelli Lagrene, a great French gypsy AND jazz guitarist)

I don't know half of you half as well as I should like, and I like less than half of you half as well as you deserve.

As I get older, I dig organ trios or quartets more and more. He was a monster musician. I caught the Free Spirits with McLaughlin. The After the Rain release is a fine tribute to Coltrane.

By and large, jazz has always been like the kind of a man you wouldn't want your daughter to associate with.
