Very cheap but useable mic?

Mike, I just wanted to add that there's more than just the quality of the mic that can really impact your recordings. A lot depends on your preamps / signal chain & something as simple as mic placement can really make or break your tracks. Definitely worth a look into to see if you can accomplish what you're after without the need for spending additional money. Or be like me & and spend additional money on gear you don't really need anyway  ;D

Very good points.

It's a journey.  If you don't own an SM58 you won't be sad if you add one to your arsenal.

When your budget can take it you may want to find a $500 large element condensor, and make sure you have a preamp that goes well with it.

The Beri. hand held condenser mic looks like a great value for the price Hook!

Good thread.
Mostly for recording I use a condenser mic. Phantom powered. It's a studio project c1

Otherwise, mic ing drums and cab I use the shures. Rock solid
