so far I would say that if you were going by record sales and impact on the world overall.... it would be Eric Clapton or Prince.... I wasn't a big Prince fan but his impact was huge and he was a good guitarist....I know folks who say he was a great guitarist... I can't say because i didn't listen to much... My favorite is Steve Miller but i would pick Eric Clapton as the greatest....

Likewise, I had not given Prince's catalog much attention. But his solo on "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" got my attention, and made me realize I've missed out on a lot.

[Sheepishly] I still haven't done a shallow or deep dive into Prince. Maybe I'll do that today.

Yep - April Wine and Max Webster. Two very underrated Canadian bands with great guitar player/singers.

I just read Myles Goodwyn's book "Just Between You & Me". Great songwriter, but he sounds like a bit of an odd duck though. I actually met Rick Emmit from Triumph about 10 years ago at a song-writer session and gave him a CD of my songs (never heard back from him though  :'()

Anyways - Richie Kotzen ain't no slouch and should be on this list. Hard to believe he actually played in Poison at one time (until he banged the drummer's fiancée  :o).

Listen to the soul he puts into this tune and you will understand how it happened -  ;D

Samantha Fish definitely belongs on this list, as does Susan Tedeschi of the band Tedeschi Trucks.

Prince wins in the "all singing all dancing" category, not just lead guitarist, and vocalist, but also songwriter, but he even plays bass and drums on his albums.   The dude was amazing. We lost him way too soon.

Samantha definitely plays lead more so I'll second her nomination, but don't forget that Susan Tedeschi can scorch on lead when she wants.

Susan and her husband Derek and their like 12 person band, are amazing.

Although she typically plays a lot of Rhythm and lets her hubby take the lead,  Susan can absolutely shred when she wants to, and she has an amazing vocal talent.

Today I learned Susan Tedeschi was born in 1970, same year as me.
