Ferryman's Pedal Board v2

Warren, the DSM Simplifier is my amp and cab. It simulates an amp, has both preamp and poweramp sections, and also has cabinet simulations (1x12, 2x12 and 4x12 with customisable mic positions). So that generates the basic guitar sound in stereo. I run the two synths, distortion pedal and compressor into the mono input, the Simplifier then outputs this as if it was played through two cabs. I run the stereo outs into inputs 1 and 2 of the BR800 and monitor through headphones (I can plug headphones direct into the Simplifier if I want).

I don't miss having speakers behind me. I don't have anywhere to play amps and unless I can wind them up, I don't personally see the point. What I hear in the phones sounds pretty good (having amp and cab sims is important I think).

I have no problem with immersion - when the distortion is on or I have the synths going and it's all running through the stereo effects, I can lose myself for hours just making noises. That doesn't help making music but it's kind of fun.......

Looks like a lot of fun to play around with, I only ever used a compressor and a chorus pedal.
These days I only use the effects on the BR900cd although I do own a looper which I bought because I really really needed it (I thought), I've never recorded with it. I also bought a Fender Mustang modelling amp which I started using but is now collecting dust. There are tones on there that I really like and I will probably start playing with it again as GarageBand doesn't have a guitar tone that works for me. I do tend to pinch the strings which gives me a tone which when playing fairly loud brings out some nice harmonics. Enjoy your pedals as much as I enjoy your playing.   Willie

I'm running out of space. This is my distortion board, however I've got more to add!

Ooh Bruno you have the rather new JHS 3 series fuzz. How you like?

You can never have too much fuzz. I had the same question as Warren - what do you think of the new JHS pedal? Interesting concept (although I am out of space....).

This is a proper cool set up Nigel... I wouldn't have a clue about what to put where, but it does look great fun. I tend to go direct in to the computer and select sounds preset in GarageBand... but I admit they are a bit limited. For messing around (I have never played live, just for my own amusement) I sometimes play through my Roland Cube amp and mess around with the few pedals that I have. I was thinking to get that Boss SY- 1 pedals too, to tinker about with. Is it fun?

Too be honest, not particularly blown away by it. It is quite noisy, less so now that I bought a proper power supply. I'll give it some time. I've yet to get a tone out of it that its like wow, there are some great tones, but not wow as yet.

The APE is acting as a preamp here, and that is wow. Its the original echoplex circuit, and sounds very, very good. When you put a delay into the APE, it has a great sound as well. The Wampler is WOW at the really overdriven sounds, but is noisy and lower distortion less good. The Hot WAX is useful and very much a tool, its is very good but a pedal to use with others. The FullTone RTO is my favourite overdrive still. Its a dark sounding pedal, so you always have to boost the high frequencies, but is as thick as pea soup. Freqout gives some feedback :-) The JHS, EHX, Wampler and the APE are all new lockdown pedals - so still playing with them.

My problem with fuzz is that I can never get anything sounding as good on a pedalboard as a Big Muff  (the old full size one) plugged straight into the MBR - just guitar and pedal, no amp, and MBR fx off. It sounds perfect. 70's fuzz with endless sustain.

The fuzz on my board is very good, just not as good as that.

The SY-1 is great but a bit limited. It is easy to get some good synth sounds with very little effort, but everything is pre-programmed and a lot of the sounds are full of 80s cheese. I went through all the presets and reckon I could use about 30% of the 121 preset sounds for the kind of thing I do. IMO it's great for pads, strings and synthy lead and/or bass. It also needs a bit of reverb to take the edge off some of the sounds and make the pads/strings really lush.
