Wow this is a great forum, so helpful. Does wavepad do much the same as Audacity? Just wondering if i need both programmes?

The only downside of the free version of Audacity is that it'll only export to .wav, therefore I need wavepad to convert to .mp3. If you only want to trim data files though, wavepad will do the job nicely. Audacity is a better all-round tool though. Oldrottenhead uses Cubase, but I haven't tried that tool myself, so I can't give you a head-to-head comparison.

... Yes but if you install the free lame encoder, you can export to mp3 as well !!

i use an older version of audacity called cool pro edits which masters to mp3. i use audicity to trim and fade in and out at beginning and end. i have never used it to add stuff like greeny does, i do that with cubase sx but only because i am more familiar with that programme.

Audition is an expensive commercial program from Adobe Systems. It was known as Cool Edit Pro before Adobe bought the company in 2003. It's an entirely different program from Audacity, which is a free, open source program. Although the names are similar, Audition and Audacity are quite different programs which were developed independently.

Audacity exports to MP3 just fine. However, the MP3 encoder is not included with the distribution for legal reasons, so you have to download it separately.

(Damn I need a loop pedal bad!).

Have a listen to Edition 4 of the Boss Tones podcasts, osckilo.  It's a 4 part interview with Philip Stendek who specialises in looping.

Osckilo ... you asked about loop stations and I just remembered this.  Have a listen to hayley mucking about with hers (and her brand new and stunning maton guitar) ...

i use audacity recording the samples outr of ez drummer to use as tone load in the br600
