Hook

Yeah, it's always a crap shoot when looking at really cheap instruments. I've had some gems and I've had 2 ebay buys that were unplayable. Check the neck, if you can, check the intonation. You can usually tell if it's more of a toy
Vs an actual usable guitar but it could be just what you need. Good luck brother.
Rock on!

James if this one is not suitable
keep an eye out for an SX strat -cheap but pretty good and If you are running the guitar into your BR your guitar presets, will make it sound pretty good-if you know what I mean.

Bit late to this, but yeah...

Check the neck - if twisted, NO WAY... if huge amount of relief (bends towards the strings), probably not...

Check the frets - if badly worn, don't bother (unless it's absolutely wonderful apart from worn frets - putting those right is no biggie but costly)

Check the bridge - are the saddles worn down? are the screws adjustable? (three to each saddle, you need them all to work... they could be rusted up or buggered by someone trying to adjust them with the wrong screwdriver or allen key)

Do all three pickups work?

... In a way, it's true you can't go wrong at £35 - but I've owned several instruments like that... and you tend to end up with a guitar you don't use and have to find space to put it somewhere anyway cos "it's an instrument" and it feels wrong just binning it!

I agree with fenderbender, SX is usually good. Don't know much about Harley Benton, apart from folks mentioning them on here.
