This is a fun thing to play around with.  Make any website look like it was created in the 90's.  And the sites still work even though they look visually retarded............. :o

I think part of the problem back then was that the graphics cards in people's computers varied widely in colour depth. So not everyone saw the site in the way that its designer intended. I remember updating one of my early websites with a lovely golden brown theme (or so I thought). A friend from a usenet lyrics group I frequented told me the new colours looked like "chicken shit". I couldn't understand why she'd say such a thing - I thought my carefully-chosen colours looked quite good. Then it suddenly dawned on me that my graphics card was 16-bit so it had a palette of 65,536 colours (wow! :o), but many web users still had 8-bit graphics cards (256 colours). So I switched to an 8-bit colour mode and, sure enough, my lovely golden brown had turned to a horrid, pukey green-brown that looked like chicken shit. So I quickly updated the site again using web-safe colours. :)

Nowadays, of course, colour depth is so high that just about any colour will look the way you intend on almost any computer so it's not a problem anymore. The bigger 'gotcha' nowadays is browser incompatibility. I design all my stuff in Firefox and sometimes something that looks great in my browser will look awful in Safari or Internet Explorer or whatever. It's impossible to test my pages in every available browser so it's easy to get stung by browser incompatibility.

Back in the days when me and grandpa were young, we'd be lucky if we got 1 bit....., and we even had to share it  ::)
