I've wanted a banjo for a while, but I'd give the same advice I would for someone who wanted to buy a decent guitar: go to a guitar or folk instrument shop and play a banjo that's in your price range. And also play instruments that are more or less expensive.

Well played...  Well played indeed.

On a serious note, I'm not so sure there are any dedicated banjo players on this site.  I would suggest you hit the banjo forums. The folks there can steer you toward some entry-level banjos that aren't crap.

I'm waiting for a cheap 5-string bluegrass banjo to arrive from Thommann. 98€, read the reviews and I'm expecting a nice instrument. Not the best, but I can't play banjo either, so it's perfect for me to strum a couple of dissonant chords innit?
