They have said it all.  Don't you love all the different styles?  My mind has definitly had an awakening.  I like many more styles than I ever used to. Thanks to this site.  I am learning so much more.

Hey, give us a clue will you....how do you play the electric guitar like that???? I have wanted to be able to do that for so long and I still can't do it. I'm learning the modes and the pentatonics and the arpeggios and the exercises and the tapping, but I still don't sound like you on this wicked instrument!
If the human brain was simple enough for us to understand, we'd be so simple, we couldn't...

well learning your technique, ( tapping etc.. ) you are heading in
the right direction. Another thing i find pretty damn useful
is, learning the notes on your Fret board till you See 'Notes'
instead of strings and frets :P

for modes... to be honest all u need to know is your major scale
and the notes within the scale very well.( knowing the notes on your fretboard will help alot! )

Modes always come in this order of the major scale. ( u probs alrdy know this)
- Ionian(major), Dorian , Phrygian, Lydian , Mixolydian ,
  Aeolian(Minor ) , Locrian.

I'll use E major as an example.
Here are the notes in E major.
E, F#, G#, A, B, C#, D#

so if u play F# and use the Emajor scale U'll get the Dorian mode.
if u play the B and use the Emajor, u'll get the Mixolydian mode.

Another way to practice mode is, play a note, ( we'll use E again )
And play all the modes over it.

now, we know Dorian is the second mode of major scale.
Which means D major scale would be use to get Dorian Mode.
Notes in D major: D, E , F# , G , A , B ,C# ,D.

And to get lets say... Lydian (4th mode in the major scale)
Play B major.
B, C# , D# , E , F# , G# , A#

Hope this helps :P Sorry! so freaking long lol , got carried away!

Oh yea, ofcourse, best thing of all is just Improvise as much as possible!
Heavy Metal all the WAY!
Oh yea... bodybuilding too :D

Cheers. Only last week did it click with the modes after my lesson. I think I get it now, but what I don't get is the 'licks'. I trapped in 'scale-like' playing still. They sound better when playing in the modes, but they still sound like scales to me. I'll keep plugging away at it. Thanks for setting me a goal to aim for....

Meant to comment on this one earlier. Great guitar playing, cool heavy licks. You've got some nice tones in there and I like the bass as well. The overall mix sounds a bit boomy to me though, not sure what's causing that. But great playing, and thanks for the theory stuff. I'll have to try to learn that one day!

Cheers,

Nigel
