Auria looks pretty good. $50 seems a lot for an iOS app, but it's a bargain for a 48-track recorder. I mean, compared to the price of a BR or Zoom, $50 isn't much.

Here's a review of Auria (begins at 9:10).

Auria is strictly an audio recorder. It doesn't do MIDI at all.

Another app that looks good is Cubasis. It's also $50 but it has unlimited audio and MIDI tracks. Its perhaps not as pretty as Auria, but it seems to do more. Certainly, being able to record MIDI tracks along with your audio tracks is a big plus. And if you already use Cubase on your PC, then Cubasis seems like the logical choice for your iPad. And Steinberg has been making DAWs for a long time, whereas Auria is the first DAW that WaveMachine Labs has ever made. I think Steinberg's experience making DAWs and the MIDI capabilities of Cubasis make it the better choice. But I have to admit that Auria's screens are very visually appealing.

I got the impression from the Sonic State reviews that both Auria and Cubasis have some limitations and really don't give you the same sort of experience you'd get in a good PC DAW like Cubase, SONAR, or even REAPER. So if your main reason for buying an iPad is to use it as a multitrack recorder, I think you might be better off investing in a good DAW for your PC instead. On the other hand, if you wanted an iPad mainly for all the awesome music apps that are available for it (AniMoog, ThumbJam, etc.), then I think something like Cubasis would be good to have as well.

Yes, I got that impression from the Sonic State reviews of both products. As they said, these are both initial releases and they're bound to get better as updates are released. But, in the meantime, I'm sure they're both usable, although it might be a bit frustrating dealing with all the problems.

Cubase sounds tempting, but I think I'll have to wait until I've got the grips on all my other new toys ;D

Damn! I was hoping you guys to say "no! ipad is all "fancy clothes and no knickers"" or something like that, but now you got me into troubles with my She-Chief Financial Officer...

I wonder what is the best strategy... "dear! I'm getting an Ipad for making music" or "dear! I'm getting an Ipad, just because it looks so nice to have one".... hmmm - 2nd...

Now more seriously:

64G, I got the BR800 and the BR80 and I was extremely disappointed, especially with the BR80. My 2 last songs were  made with Reaper and EnergyXT, which I bought the full version. EnergyXT is very small, it is portable (my digital life is a mess with too many computers around) and it runs on Linux (even though, apparently some VSTs don't run at all). My geek project is to get a persistent linux in a pen disk with my music apps, and happily move from computer to computer. But for that, I would need to be proficient with Linux, which I am not. And I need a short term solution.

Another aspect, there is the dss ak (ante-kids) and the dss pk (post-kids). I only have time for myself when they  are sleeping, and when that happens, either I am not at home, or I am but I can't make any noise. The ipad seems interesting for the freedom and lightness it inspires. It is easy to move around.

I don't know when, but I am pretty much decided to buy one. And this means this is the end of the line for the BRs & friends. I seriously think the Ipad killed the multitrack recorder.

Thank you all for the comments, and I hope we soon start more threads with ipad apps.

There are two iPads in my home (Mrs Demon owns them) and I just cannot bring myself to view them as anything more than a very expensive toy.

Not even a mini USB port. Can't employ VST or VSTi plugins. Can't install my DAW software on it.
Limited memory and storage space, which is non-expandable. No multitasking capability.
For what an iPad costs, $600 or more, might as well buy a computer. Much more capability.

I've already filled up nearly a terabyte of drive space on finished music and work in progress.
I have six terabytes of drive space on my home network, so no worries there.

The cloud belongs in the sky.
Can't bring myself to keep my data on a remote server that may not even be in the country I live in.
I never had a problem backing up my data and I do not trust total strangers who want me to pay them to
keep my data safe. Its already safe in my home.

iPads are nice movie and music players. They are too big to carry around on a daily basis.
I prefer carrying an iPod Touch. Fits nicely in a pocket.

My two cents worth.

I can't answer any of your questions because I've never done any serious recordings on GB on my iPad.  You've gotten tons of good advice anyhow!  lol

I like to use it to work out parts of my songs, or to work out bass and drums.  My man cave is pretty small and I have to put everything away when I'm not using it.  It's much easier to whip out my iPad than it is to set everything up.  It's also great fun to set up a groove on GB and improvise guitar over it.

Interesting. I gave a thought to the ipod. My daily mobile is an android which is OK for all the things phones now do. It is quite poor in terms of music apps (though there are some interesting apps like chordbot or SynprezFM) but they are quite limited in terms of making music standalone. I am not really interested on the iphone (which besides I find absurdly expensive!). The ipod seemed an interesting alternative, but I noticed many of the music apps from apple store are not compatible with  the ipod. I am afraid of investing money on an hardware that seems to be forgotten by app developers...
