In particular I would like to crop my video like I would crop a picture. I don't think I can do it with windows movie maker? Any suggestions would be helpful!

Alfredo posted a link to some Adobe software which seemed to be illegitimate and free, old versions but still the real deal.

Check out Adobe Premiere, it's industry standard and very flexible, but it can be used with little or no training.

iMovie - but that requires a Mac
Have used Windows Movie Maker, and that works okay - it was a while ago though. I found the issue wasn't so much the tool, but performance - video files tend to be big and require lots of processing power. Even just importing/exporting files takes ages, sometimes a number of hours - I don't know what they are like these days though, not done it for a while.
