Someday - AndyR Original

AndyR

Another one-voice, one-guitar, "live" performance in my broom-cupboard. This time it's the good ole tin guitar on a blues-type thing called "Someday".

I've ummed and aahed over the years on whether to record this as a "band thing" or like this. Yesterday, while I was rehearsing a trad old blues/folk song to record with the resonator (called "Cabbage Head" or "4/5/6 Nights Drunk" depending on how many verses you know!), the songsheet for this fell out of the box. It was written on the type of guitar I was holding, in this tuning, so I cleared the tracks I'd been recording and did this instead.

I wrote it in 2002 during the "dark years" :D. The song was kinda written about my wife (but I hadn't actually met her by then!!).

It's been called "I Do" for ten years. But when I was listening to it repeatedly during mixing/mastering, it became obvious it ought to be called "Someday".

One voice, one resonator, one take (4th)... and lots of p1ssing about with it afterwards (to make it sound as natural as I could!) :D

Somedays I wake up smiling
I know what I want
I know what I want
Somedays I wake up smiling
I know what I want
I do

Walk to school but find I'm naked
I feel such a fool
Feel such a fool
Walk to school but wind up naked
Feel such a fool
I do

Don't wake me - I know I'm dreaming
Disturb me - I'll wake up screaming
Don't shake me when I'm in this sweat
Things are bad
But I ain't dead yet

Someday I wake up smiling
I know what I want
I do

From the tree where I been hiding
I took a tumble
Dreadful tumble
From this tree where I been hiding
I took a tumble
Down

Here at the bottom, well, you was there
There to catch me
There to catch me
At the bottom you was there to catch me
With your pretty arms
And I do

Don't wake me – in case I'm dreaming
Disturb me – I might wake up screaming
Don't shake me when I'm in this sweat
Things are bad
But I ain't dead yet

Someday I wake up smiling
I know what I want
I know what I want
Someday I wake up smiling
I know what I want
I do

Don't wake me – in case I'm dreaming
Disturb me – I might wake up screaming
Don't shake me when I'm in this sweat
Things are bad
But we ain't dead yet

Someday I wake up smiling
I know what I want
I know what I want
Someday soon I wake up smiling
I know what I want
I do

While this would certainly work well in a band context, I love the bare-bone acoustic version you decided to do. A single singer with just an acoustic guitar always attracts me. And especially when the singer is that awesome.

Another little gem I'm glad to have found.

:D Aah... I'd met one of these wife things before...

The "dark years" were an almost 10 year chunk of "life going on hold" after that one decided to wander off.

This was one of many songs of a carthartic and self-encouraging nature written during this time (one or two of which have found their way into recorded status, many are still waiting).
