Fade Out

Is it possible to do a fade out on the Micro br?
I tried what I thought was the obvious way; turning down the master volume whilst recording the master, but all this did was record the entire song at the lower, faded volume ie zero.

If not possible to do this on the BR, can anyone recommend a freeware program (I am broke) that will accomplish this?
