A man is walking down the street, looking in store windows.  He has mutton-chops and a brown leather coat almost to his knees.  He rounds a corner into a desolate side street past a dumpster.  He knocks three times on a door, pauses, and knocks two more times.  A woman opens the door.  She looks half asleep.  He walks past her down the hall.  He's in a room with a mattress on the floor and some syringes on an upside-down cardboard box.  Water is running from the other room.

Oh hell, the song just ended.

This is great, James. I've been a fan of the 'spoken' song ever since I first heard the Velvet Underground's brilliant song 'The Gift'. This has a bit of that in it for sure, but it's a damn fine compliment on my part. You have a knack - vocally and lyrically - for making this kind of thing work. Most people can't do it.
